Matmid changes upon changes upon changes
First El Al tells us there are changes happening to the program on April 1 2019:
https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlye...s/default.aspx Then they tell us, that some of those changes will not take effect on April 1 2019, but instead will take place on July 1 2019. And in addition there are some other changes that will take place on December 1 2019. https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlye...ts-010719.aspx So this makes the already ridiculously complex points-earning and utilization table even more ridiculously complex: https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlye...L-Flights.aspx https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlye...nts-Cards.aspx https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlye...nd-Points.aspx Do the people at El Al not realize how ridiculous the tables look with constant date disclaimers that are years in the past ("for flights as of June 28, 2015", "Departures as of October 15, 2018") or this gem - is there a reason I need to know in 2019 how many points flights to NY earned until October 29,2017?Boston (for flights as of June 28, 2015), Toronto New York (Until October 28, 2017)New York (As of October 29, 2017) |
I get my ticket through an agent and points won’t be accused on his fee. I am sure agents are livid. What percentage he makes shouldn’t be my business. Also, depending how large a percentage- agents are going to be hurting! |
So even more negative changes.
I've given up trying to understand their points accumulation to be honest as it is so unclear, confusing and changes so often. To be honest, I've given up on them period. I'll accumulate points on my FlyCard because it's pretty much the only decent Israeli miles earning credit card, and I'll redeem mostly when there special offers. I hardly ever use my hard earned cash with them anymore. |

I was an avid FlyCard Premium holder, but not anymore. I've just gone back to using my U.S. card portfolio instead (might I recommend you do the same?). Between Chase Sapphire Reserve, Citi Prestige, and others - there are plenty of great ways to rack up the points and miles.

El Al completely revamps matmid earning and redemption
https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlyer/EarningPoints/Pages/Loyalty-points-New.aspx
https://www.elal.com/en/FrequentFlyer/UtilizingPoints/Award-tickets/Pages/Redeeming-Points-Award-tickets.aspx Is this an April fool's joke? After coming out previously with several announcements about changes to the program earning they send this out with one days notice of the change going into effect?! Previous changes were supposed to come into effect on April 1 and July 1 and December 1 as per the links in this post: https://www.flyertalk.com/forum/el-al-matmid/1958554-matmid-changes-upon-changes-upon-changes.html While the new simplified earnings and redemptions look cleaner , I'm sure the PL, and TPL flyers will have plenty to complain about since the bonus for elite flyers is the same for all of them. (1 point per $8 of spend instead of 1 point per $10 of spend ). |
With the new earning per $, it’s easy to calculate the amount of yearly $ spent for each level: TP - $32K T - $14K G - $7K It’s a lot of money compared to other FFP that I know of such as UA, TK or RJ. |

Silver - 400 Points = 400 x $10 = $4000 Gold - 1000 points (600 additional after being Silver) = 600 x $8 = $4800 + $4000 for silver = $8800 Plat - 2500 points (1500 additional after being gold = 1500 x $8 = $12000 + $8800 for Gold = $20800 Top Plat - 6500 points (4000 additional after being plat) = 4000 x $8 = $32000 + $20800 for Plat = $52800 I used the figures at this link: https://www.elal.com/he/FrequentFlye...efits-New.aspx Now there it also says that Gold and Platinum and Top Platinum get extra points per flight. So if we take that into account, the spend requirements become: Silver - 400 Points = 400 x $10 = $4000 Gold - 1000 points (600 additional after being Silver) = 600 x $8 = $4800 + $4000 for silver = $8800 Plat - 2500 points (1500 additional after being gold = 1370 (+ 10% bonus 137 points) x $8 = $10960 + $8800 for Gold = $19760 Top Plat - 6500 points (4000 additional after being plat) = 2860 (+40% bonus 1144 points) x $8 = $22880 + $20800 for Plat = $42640 |

How did you arrive at those numbers? ...
In some FFPs there’s a huge difference between getting the status or maintaining it. E. g., to get the highest TK status Elite Plus, someone will need to fly 80K miles in one year. The status is held for 2 years. To maintain the status someone has to fly either 40K miles in the first year of membership or 60K in the 2 years of membership. For someone who is positioned in CAI that can be spent of as low as $2,500 compared to LY P’s $14,000. |
Points in Premium
TLV-LHR class P - 49 base, 20 for PL, 10 for Fly card. Total for status 59. In old system was 72 for status LHR-TLV class B - 61 base, 24 for PL, 12 for Fly card. Total for status 73. In old system was 96 for status I will probably not re-qualify to PL although the threshold was lowered to 2100 |
This is soo confusing. Who's got the time or the inclination to work out the value of a leg, a trip, or even staying with the airline.
So for those that do - If I'm a PL spending around $30k a year with the airline and all flights booked using my Premium Flycard, how many points and tier points should I have by the end of the year. Harder question - now how do I compare that to flying BA using BA Amex Premium Plus starting from zero status |
