The 744 and 772 aircraft have personal IFEs. I'm assuming that's the driver to install them in aircraft where there is none. I think a lot of airlines will consider this approach in the long run and be rid of personal IFE but I don't expect LY to renovate the existing systems, however bad they are.

Exactly the approach UA is taking, updating the 744s which have no PTVs with streaming entertainment

Some airlines are using Android-based tablets in the seat back for IFE. They can leverage the same infrastructure they are using for their consumer apps and flight crew apps. This will open up additional possibilities around pre-selecting content, targeting messages to specific passengers and enable them to start to provide destination services like taxi booking and the like.

Yes, I know, and while they were state of the art back in 1994 when they were first installed on 4X-ELA AND 4X-ELB, they have been outdated for a while now. They lack touch screen and utilize a loop system rather than AVOD. Certainly replacing that decades old outdated system with the streaming one is preferable.
