Changing/Cancelling Restricted Tickets

Hi all -

Does anyone have recent experience changing or cancelling restricted tickets? I bought a ticket that is non-changeable and non-refundable, but I am wondering if there is anything I could do if I can't make the flight.

Should I upgrade the ticket to a higher class and then apply for a refund? Will that work?

What was not clear on the non-changeable and non-refundable rule?
Anyway if you bring a good excuse which is backup by an official document
(Grandma Died, Medical Operation, The Dog eat your passport...) EL-AL might be nice to you that day!

As long as it isn't a group ticket and you are talking about NYC-TLV then you normally should be able to cancel for $250 or change it for $170-$220

Was it non-refundable, or refundable for a cancellation fee? Upgrading to a higher class will not help, as in regards to cancellation, it will retain the original rules. Otherwise, everyone who wanted a refund would do that
