Tr bgn-eth-bgn

I knew long ago that we would go for a weekend to Eilat. The cheapest was Arkia Express. We paid 500 NIS for 3 seats and one suitcase. The only problem was the hours of the flights.
Thursday 5:55 AM BGN-ETH. Arrived at the airport one hour before the flight (I guess the it was too much). It took us 10 minutes from the time we enterd the terminal until we got to the gate...
Bussed to the plane (757-300) took off 10 minutes late. 35 minute flight. On the flight they sell food for very good prices. 8 Nis for a can of drink or coffee, 12 NIS for a sandwich.
After arriving in Eilat (walk from the aircraft to the terminal) our luggage was almost last but less than half an hour after we landed we were in the hotel.
Saturday 14:00 ETH-BGN. again it took ten minutes although there were other flights checking in (ETH-SDV). Flight 35 minutes. In BGN bussed to the terminal, this time our suitcase was among the first ones.
In counclusion - Arkia express with vey low price and got us there quick.
(just for comparision: people who wantes to fly LY and purcahsed tickets a long time ago got a ticket on thursday morning for 100 NIS BUT no cheap flight back on SAT)

I have just picked my jaw back off the floor. You paid less than 170 NIS return per person, and LY sold a one-way for 100 NIS?!?! Surely surely surely you mean dollars? The EGGED BUS costs 125 NIS!

I am flying in December, completely flexible on days, and could not get a price even close to this, even on quiet days - the very cheapest was 299 NIS return on a so-called special offer but at useless times.

Who did you book these through?

Houminer Oct 18, 2010 11:31 pm

Arkia Express 3 months before the flight is 79 Shekel! (one way0
Elal has flights for 99 Shekel.

Alll three companies sell the tickets to Eilat in Shekel and not dollar.

Maybe some people enjoy the 5 hour bus ride......

In ELAL the 100nis doesnt require 3 months in advance, So you need to book
earlier as possible or be Leumi Card holder...

I'm a bit confused here. Why would anyone take the bus when flying is cheaper and quicker!
And does BGN refer to TLV? (Ben-GurioN)

Houminer Oct 21, 2010 12:43 am

International flights: Ben gurion airport is TLV although it is actually not in Tel aviv.
Domestic flights: Sde Dov which is in Tel Aviv is SDV and Ben gurion is BGN

Not saying you are wrong, but can you refer us to where you get this info from as I'm intrigued.

Never heard TLV being referred to as BGN for domestic flight purposes, and in fact BGN is Bruggen airfield in Germany (which is an Air Force base I believe).

My only source of information:
When flying on domsetic flights this is what is written on the luggage tags. When flying from eilat you get a luggage tag of BGN or SDV.

Indeed, however that's only to make the baggage processing process for the employees..

Are you flying only a domestic itinerary, or part of an international connection?

NorthernAZtraveler Oct 31, 2010 9:55 pm

Well then, it's just a question of where you're coming from.
SDV is much closer to Tel Aviv, and much less of a hassle flying out from.

+1. SDV is a much smaller and more convenient airport. Only reason I could think of to fly out of TLV instead is if you prefer LY.

Or flying on a Jet.
