Well yes. Hence why they are low cost and BA and LY are full service carriers. I'm not arguing BA's prices are not expensive from TLV, they certainly are But LY are no better in that resect.
It's been an expensive route for years and despite the LCC entering the market that hasn't made much of a difference. You realise how expensive it is when you search for a LHR-JFK/LAX-LHR flights and see BA (as well as VS) are selling the route for $350...

Whether VS entering the TLV market will make a difference price wise remain to be seen, but allow me to be sceptic on that front.

There are high taxes both on leaving from TLV and the Air Passenger duty on leaving the UK. APD for a flight to Israel in Economy class is 78GBP or $98 at current exchange rates. IAA shows fees of $26 per departing passenger from Ben Gurion Terminal 3 and $12 for Terminal 1. There are other general fees imposed by the IAA per flight, which airlines probably allocate per passenger as well.

APD Ex TLV is actually pretty low. especially when compared to LHR or JFK for example.

Meanwhile, down south, Eilat is partially opening to domestic flights on 1/22.

They will move the flights over slowly from ETH. No word yet as to when international flights will start - the talk was April 2019, but now I am hearing of delays because of lack of emergency response units at the new Airport.

Another incompetently run project by the master of cutting ribbons, Yisrael Katz, the transportation minister. This airport has been 6 months away from opening for the last 3 years, and now they still havent worked out arrangements with the emergency services. This is the same as one of the many issues they had with the new Jerusalem-Tel Aviv train line.

Unless they are flying NY-LGW I doubt they will fly LGW-TLV as that will mean no connecting NA traffic or very little

Ive always wondered why they let BA have the route to themselves, 1 thing if they flew it and lost their pants another not to fly it at all

Good point. Their NYC flights are all from LHR, so makes sense that the proposed TLV flights will also be to LHR. It seems they only fly to MCO and LAS from LGW.

Philippines Airlines wants to start direct flights to Israel

https://www.timesofisrael.com/livebl...hts-to-israel/
They've asked permission to overfly Saudi Arabia to make these flights possible. I personally don't think they will be allowed because:
1. Philippines is not India
2. Current instability in Saudi Arabia over last few months means the Saudis will not want show right now that they are "normalizing" with Israel.

And from the South China Morning Post

Philippine Airlines seeks Saudi overfly permit for direct route to Israel

Thursday, 03 January, 2019

QUOTE:

"Direct Philippines-Israel flights would be welcomed by the thousands of Filipinos employed as careworkers in Israel, and tourists heading in either direction. The number of tourists visiting Israel from the Philippines rose by 61 per cent in 2017, and tourism in the other direction rose by 42 per cent in 2016."

Analysis of Virgin Atlantic possibility

https://onemileatatime.com/virgin-atlantic-tel-aviv/
Pretty good analysis of the possibility of Virgin Atlantic opening up a route to TLV. Though I disagree about the lie-flat beds as BA, IB, and LX all use long-haul planes with lie flat beds for at least some of their flights to TLV.

Interesting thanks.

Just to point out, BA and IB use only L/H aircraft with lie flat beds on the route. With LX is varies. They were using two L/H aircraft a day, but are now using one S/H and one L/H (77W).
