Smile Dollar Full-size @MCO

Hi there,

I'm from Germany and want to go to Florida in September.
I booked a full-size car from Dollar rental.

Can somebody please list what kind of cars I will get?

Is there a chance (we are only 2 people) to get a sporty car, like a Dodge Challenger or a Ford Mustang? (Germans like big engines, hehe)

Thank u very much for helping me out.

ciao,
Bjoern

Welcome to FlyerTalk, bjoerndd!

I assume you're going to Orlando or Miami, which are centrally owned corporate stores. (Dollar in Jacksonville is a franchised location--privately owned and licensed--and may have different cars. I'm not sure about Tampa, Fort Lauderdale, or any of the other locations.)

If that's the case, a Charger or Mustang is fairly likely, since these locations stock these cars. The Challenger is not: Dollar does not (to my knowledge) stock the Challenger at any of its locations.

Ask nicely, and since you'll be buying the coverage (in the U.S., the rental rate does not include comprehensive or collision [damage to the vehicle] or third party liability [property damage or bodily injury/medical to anyone you hit, so you must obtain these products separately), you can sort of "bribe" the agent (since they operate on a commission system) to give you what you want. Check the lot before going in (if possible)--that way, you can sort of have your eye on a particular vehicle and let the agent know what you'd like.

A Mustang convertible is also an option--I had one a few years ago down that way. They may want more money for one of those.

The ones you'll get, though, are not the massive motors that you see in the motorcar magazines--Dodge's 5.7L, 368-hp (274 kW) V8 Hemi or the SRT-8's 6.1L, 425-hp (317 kW) V8 Hemi or Ford's 5.4L, 540-hp (403 kW) Modular V8. They're usually the base trim--a relatively mediocre 3.5L, 250-hp (186 kW) V6 in the Charger and a 4.0L, 210-hp (157 kW) Cologne V6 in the Mustang. Those may still be big engines by European standards, but since the American cars are a good bit heavier than most anything a European sports sedan maker puts out, they're not as exciting to drive as, say, a BMW 335i.

While expensive, Dollar's Style Series at Orlando may be something you're interested in. These actually are the nicely-equipped, powerful versions of the cars listed.

Hope this helps, and please do ask any more questions about your trip! There's a whole sub-forum here devoted to Florida as well as sub-forums for the airlines you'll be flying and for the hotels you'll be staying at. People here are very helpful!

@jackal

Thank you very much for your answer.

When u book a car in Germany for your stay in the US, all insurance is included.
(my broker said I do not need any more insurance)

I will arrive on the 3th of September and will leave Florida the 17th of September. That's my first visit of Florida. I'm very excited to see the "sunshine state" and travel with a good american car, hehe.

the data from my voucher for dollar:

Typ/Type: F4 Fullsize 4d oors o.s AUT AC
incl. Unlimited Mileage
LDW, SLI, UMP, Theft Protection
Taxes, Airport Fees

So, I'm looking forward to get a good car.

thx again,

greetz

Hi Bjoern,

A rental with Dollar in Orlando (not MCO, but other location on Rt. 192) landed us a red Dodge Charger. We had actually booked a mid-size (www.billiger-mietwagen.de), and were upgraded to the full-size Charger. After the first week's rental we began a second rental booking (first was with additional driver, second rental without) and planned to trade cars at Dollar on International Drive. The mid-size that was again booked would have been a PT-Cruiser, but we were allowed to keep the Charger anyway (although the CSR didn't seem very happy to do so).

Ah, looks like you got one of the prepaid voucher deals. Those do include all the necessary coverages (LDW and SLI are the minimums) and are generally a pretty good deal.

Your agent won't be getting commission on that, though, so the "bribery" card isn't as easy to play.

Probably I do something crazy!

What I really like is the Mercury Grand Marquis or the Lincoln Town Car.
I know this cars are not sporty overall, but hey.... I'm in the US and we have holiday... so ride easy and smooth.

The Grand Marquis is on stock at Dollar rent? Maybe its just the premium class?

I try to be very friendly to the agent... maybe I will do some jokes about germans and the agent will give me the car that I want.

thx,

Bjoern
