Experiences with changes in "estimated" fees ?

We have a one week one way rental booked with dollar from LAX to Las Vegas Treasure Island. I was about to change the pick up time (slight sch. chg) when I noticed that the total rate was virtually doubling from $413 to $796. Obviously I didn't chg the res but Im now wondering about the following.
The res that I made had no drop fee listed. On a new res. they're charging a drop fee of $200 for my dates. Is that something they could attempt to add at the counter. If so I'd be better off switching to an Avis res. which although currently is about $100 more would be less than the dollar res with a drop chg. How accurate are these "estimated grand total" 's generally ?

First, go back and make sure your original res actually has drop off in Vegas listed. I've had Internet sites screw that up and quote me a price for return to the same location when I originally wanted one way.

I'd go ahead and make a reservation with Avis, too, just in case Dollar tries to add on the extra fees. The other res costs you nothing, and is good insurance. It would be polite to call Avis and let them know you won't be using it if the Dollar res works out.

Definitely print out the whole res and bring it with you.

I booked directly on the Dollar site, and the drop location is accurate. I just made the backup res with Avis, though I have to be honest doing so makes me feel a little guilty...lol. Is there no way to ascertain in advance whether Dollar will chg a drop chg if it isn't listed?

I've never had any significant extra charges added. Occasionally tax will be a percent or two different. I think you will be fine if you bring the printed res along.

As I'm sure you are aware, they will try to sell you extra insurance, so decide beforehand whether you need it.

I know what you mean about not feeling 100% right about making the second res, but once in a while I do so for reasons like this, or if I suspect a location might be out of cars, i.e., arriving at MCO late at night during spring break.

I just had charges on a five-day, one-way rental (booked from BTV to BOS) balloon from $164 to $198 owing to unexplained additional or different fees. The base rate remained the same ($140) but fees were more than double the estimate. I have a query into Dollar to ask ....
