Think doner kebabs are halal? Think again.

There is a good chance they consist partially of pork (not a problem for me, as I love the stuff, but if you are muslim or Jewish):

Doner kebabs were never likely to be cornerstones of a calorie-controlled diet, but just reading the contents in samples of the Turkish dish that became a staple of British takeaways may be enough to give you a heart attack.

Food standards officers who analysed nearly 500 kebabs to check meat content, labelling and nutritional value found "shocking" levels of fat and salt, inaccurate labelling of meat and, on average, enough calories to provide half a woman's recommended daily intake.

Six kebabs tested by local councils contained pork, in a dish that originates from a predominantly Muslim country and that many people assume to consist of lamb. Two of these even claimed to be Halal...

The arab word "halal" meaning - more or less - "approved for dietary consumption".

Unfortunately it's what happens when mass producers/processors of food get their hands on something that is so processed you can't easily and readily identify its contents. No worst than what are called wieners/frankfurters/hot dogs in the U.S. though those don't really claim/allude to be anything (other than "meat").

As for the health of doner kebabs, I saw a travel show that went to where the stuff (not just the town but reputedly, the restaurant too) originated in Turkey. The restaurant served you the kebabs on a plate and then pouring melted butter on them!

Though I DO like Kosher beef franks. Though who knows what's really in them, but they always seem to have a better flavor than regular franks.

Not quite in the same league but in Egypt, the choice was usually chicken or "meat". "Meat" was never defined (even when the servers were asked) but could have been goat, sheep, beef, donkey, or your god knows what. I guess it could even have been pork if you were dealing with the Coptic Christians.

While in erlin this year, I ate at several Doner Kebab places and had mixed results. Back in the 80s in Germany when the Kebab shops became popular you were able to get Lamb kebab. Nowadays the lamb meat is "too expensive" as one of the shop owners stated and nobody wants to buy it. Most of them now sell either chicken or beef (which I think is more like mixed meat) kebabs.

It's amazing how many Doner Kebab shops there are in Berlin.

Happy eating.

I used to sell Kosher meats, not too much is in true Kosher (read not Kosher-style) hot dogs, usually beef, spices, some preservatives and that is it, only the forequarter cuts of beef are used.

A kosher frank is good no doubt but a natural casing frank is what really sets apart a hot dog in my opinion, I don't care what meat(s) or parts it is stuffed with.

I'm aware that in Islam, one is forgiven for not eating Halal unknowingly particularly if they are told the food in question is halal.

Of course the definiton of halal can vary widely.
