Tomato Juice!
So, I just thought IŽd throw this in - I did a quick search on FT and did not really find anything, so here it is:
I barely see anyone drink tomato juice anywhere, but in the air suddenly thereŽs always some people around me who order it... Discuss :D IŽve tried it a few times and I seem to like it in the air (hate in on the ground) - does it taste differently or is it something psychological? Any ideas? |
I routinely drink V8 with breakfast, so I'll drink tomato juice in the air if I'm on a flight where breakfast is served. I have noticed that when I do order it, it seems like several other people after me will do likewise.
Maybe it's one of those "Hey, that sounds good!" things. Or maybe they really want a bloody mary but don't have exact change.:D |
I've noticed that also, and the same with ginger ale ... which just like tomato juice is pointless without the alcohol.
|
I like tomato juice - and in the air it can be something "substantial" on a flight only offering pretzels. I do drink it occasionally at home. It's tough to have in the house, as large bottles go bad quickly (it evaporates and leaves a gross film that eventually makes it chunky and undrinkable) and little bottles/cans get expensive.

Seems like a perfect thread for our DiningBuzz forum. Please follow it there. Ocn Vw 1K, Moderator, TravelBuzz.

Mrs. Scubadiver gave me the idea. On flights in steerage where the FA gives you a thimblefull of soda, order tomato juice. So few people order it, she'll be inclined to give you the whole can. Besides, I like tomato juice.

I don't think I'd ever had tomato juice until I flew BA in 1999. With a dash of Worcestershire sauce, it was quite enjoyable! (I was under 21 at the time, so apologies for not adding the appropriate alcohol... ;))
I tried it on the ground (sans sauce) and it was only OK. I've always been meaning to buy a bottle of Worcestershire sauce and try it again, but I never manage to get the two ingredients in my house at the same time (I either use all the sauce before buying the tomato juice or I run out of tomato juice before buying the sauce). |
I don't care for plain tomato juice, but I drink a lot of bloody mary mix sans alcohol on flights. Love that stuff!

That's funny! I think I started getting served alcohol on TATL flights at the age of 15. I know BA definitely served me when I was 16, and again at 19. Anyway, back to the thread, I love tomato juice. I always have a few cans in my fridge, as for ginger-ale, I tend to order it restaurants when I want a non-alcoholic sparkling drink other than water. I find that most Asian restaurants tend to stock it. Never order it on flights. |
I love eating tomatoes but really dislike plain tomato juice and V-8. However, I love clamato juice (by Motts). It's basically tomato juice with clam broth and sweetened a bit. Ends up having a tangy/sweet taste. Not sure if it's more of a Canadian thing.
It's my standard beverage of choice on flights. A virgin bloody mary is my backup. One of my favorite cocktails is a Caesar which has clamato as the base, a shot of vodka, a dash of worcestershire sauce, a dash of tabasco sauce, and a typically a stick of celery (or a pickled bean) as a garnish in a salt rimmed glass. Love it! Particularly with a some horseradish. |
I used to drink Bloody Mary mix on flights too... until I looked at the salt content.. yeouch.
Never really considered drinking tomato juice straight. I hear though, that its very filling and a good thing to order if you're trying to stave off the munchies until you get to your destination. |
With vodka...
I always ask for tomato juice with vodka (if possible) while flying... not exactly a bloody mary, but does the trick. =P
|
I love tomato juice! A breakfast of eggs and tomato juice or steak and eggs, with the tomato juice makes the perfect breakfast.
I also love V-8 and clamato. When flying, I always order the Bloody Mary mix -usually with vodka. It seems as though the FA comes back to offer a second drink rather quickly as I know there is more left in the can. |

= Tomato or is it Tomatoe juice is an excellent inflight choice provided one has the tools to doctor it appropriately with Tabasco, salt and plenty of pepper. |
I generally ask for tomato juice at breakfast time. I don't drink sweet drinks, so tomato juice or water are the only things for me. I usually carry a bottle of water on planes, so I have the tomato juice.

Sure, why not? I was handed a can of bloody mary mix. I guess it was, in a manner of speaking, accurate... :D (I actually prefer straight tomato juice, though.) |
Great product launched in the UK about 3 years ago - Big Tom, it's a spicy tomato juice cocktail drink (Bloody Mary without the Vodka and the overpowering worcester sauce that IMO which I personally don't care for)

I like salt a lot. Luckily I seem to be one of the 90+% of the population who does not suffer any ill affects from consuming it. :)
I usually drink a can of V8 everyday to be sure I get some added vegetables in my diet. Tomato juice would be an acceptable replacement, but I like the added flavors in V8. I will also drink Bloody Mary mix on flights...sometimes with or sometimes without vodka. :) Best regards, William R. wow, it is quite interesting to read your responses! tried it some more and i really start to like it. havent tried v8 (can u get it onboard?) yet and did not get offered bm mix. do you drink it with or without ice? i sometimes forget to tell them no ice and then i have it all watered up..

Tomato juice
I like tomato juice but the sodium level is too high for me. I used to be able to find "no salt added" tomato juice but it seems to have disappeared.
Now I usually order orange juice and vodka, if offered in flight. It does seem to fill a hole if one is still waiting for breakfast. |
Our family almost always drinks tomato juice and Ginger ale on flights. Don't know why though....we almost never drink either at home!?
|
I love V8 and always have tomato juice (no ice) on the plane. I just really like the stuff.

Vodka added for me, a traditional eye opener, while my wife prefers those nasty "Mimosas", about the only use for really cheap Bubbly and the quality of the OJ served by most airlines. |
Thought I'd add a link to an nice article describing the origins of clamato juice and the Caesar cocktail...

Another bloody mary mix flyer here. As previously noted, usually the entire can would be given whereas everyone else would be getting a splash of soda with a cup of ice. Although I have no sodium issues healthwise, at home I drink the low sodium V8 on a daily basis with a splash of jalapeno or some other hot sauce and a squirt of lemon or lime juice.

I make campechana on a regular basis, just in case campechana is a Mexican seafood cocktail I usually make with oysters, octopus, & shrimp along with cucumbers, tomatoes, onions, avocado. I usually simply use Clamato or V8 as the juice base. Bloody Mary's - though not so much anymore, just seems we keep drinking less & less alcohol. |

I wish I could get V8 here.... :( |
I love this stuff!
Not only is the low sodium recipe a bazillion times better for you but the flavor of the vegetables is much more pronounced. I love this stuff and drink it daily. ^

I have been drinking the low sodium V8 juice at home. I think it does have a better flavor than the regular high salt version. Sometimes I'll add a drop or two of hot sauce to spice it up. The only problem is that it's rarely on sale at the grocery store.
|
I rarely if ever drink tomato juice anywhere but on a plane, I think, as a previous poster mentioned one of those "hey that sounds good" that I probably wouldn't order if someone else hadn't mentioned it.
I am surprised no mention of tomato juice and beer, see this a lot in bars in the mornings (not that I've ever been in a bar in the morning.) |
I always found it funny that mixing alcohol with tomato juice automatically makes it socially acceptable to drink alcohol in the morning. :p
|
I love tomato juice and V-8
It is tasty and good for you. Although try to get the low sodium versions.
Throw in some vodka and a celery shaft and I am a happy camper! :D |
Quite often my first choice of drink in-flight. Make a great pre-flight drink vs. OJ if you can get it.
