I don't have personal experience with MREs but I've always wanted to try one to see what they're like. I've heard that MREs have made significant progress over the years.
I've also heard that Canadian MREs are amongst the best tasting out of all the armed forces out there. This too adds to my curiosity about them. |
I was a hollywood Marine which could account for the p-38 being called a John Wayne, could be a west coast thing.

I remember when we transitioned from C-Rations to MRE's in the late 70's. I preferred the C-Rations. Things must have changed. My son tells me the MRE's are great.

MREs are certainly much better now than they were when they first came out. I liked the Thai one; it was all right. And mixing up the graham crackers with the peanut butter and hot chocolate was fun...a smore without the marshmallows. :)
I happened to be cleaning the trunk of my car and found MRE crackers and jam in my emergency box. Since I got out in 2001, these guys must be at least that old. I put them back; never know when they'll come in handy. |
My fiance was stationed in GA to go to Iraq - circa 2003. After 3 months in the "prepared" state and all meals being MRE's, all I can say is "Watch Out!" These things are packed with the calories because of how much soldiers burn while in combat. Needless to say, there was some significant weight gain!

So which one did you have?
They have improved greatly since in came in the Army back in 1986. I am rather partial to the beef enchilada, very tasty.
