" Anyone tried the Vertuoline ? "

Yes.

Saturday, I braved all the shoppers in town and gave it a try. Impressive !

First, this Nespresso machine ( which looks very smart ) offers a bridge between espresso and an American-sized coffee cup serving. Black, chrome, or red machine colour.

Second, the capsules are different, and have 2 sizes between espresso and American-sized coffee. The machine reads a bar code on each new inserted capsule and determines how much water is required in the mix. I was told that the machine spins the coffee capsule inside to achieve a better mix.

Third, this is a larger machine, primarily in width. The water reservoir is also larger.

Fourth, basically a 3 step process. Open the machine top or head, insert the capsule of choice, close and lock the lid or head, and push a button.

I tried 2 espressos and 1 American coffee (a decafe by that time ), and they all were quite good rich taste and aroma. The new capsule price is about the same as before.

One would have to leave the previous Nespresso capsules completely as they are not interchangeable between machines. As I have a few of the original Nespresso machines here and there, and take a Nespresso Pixie along when I travel, I will remain where I am at the moment.

If you want the option of serving 2 sizes of good coffee with a good selection, this machine would be a good appliance to have.

Hi, I was curious about an update on this. Any new information among the various models. Also, does the Nespresso Inissia produce the same quality expresso as the more expensive models? Thanks.

Swissaire Jan 7, 2015 8:44 am

Hi Gadget -

Yes, my wife and I were given a demonstration a few months ago ahead of the new Inissia arrival.

A few notes:

1. This machine is smaller.
2. It has more settings for coffee size, including a larger American sized cup.
3. It is more compact, and has features like a cable connector in back which would be good for travel. ( I take my Pixie & capsules with me when I travel these days ). If it sits on the countertop, it doesn't matter.

4. Speaking on that topic, this machine is in the original line classification. It uses the Original capsules, and not the larger Vertuo line capsules.

We did not buy one. We gave as usual some of the Pixies away as Christmas gifts, as we have in the past, and purchased a few of that model instead.

If I wanted a newer model of Nespresso maker, more compact, the Inissia would be a good choice.

I used to own a Nespresso machine when I lived in the US (because if you're going to drink crap, you might as well drink your own cheap crap).

My first observation is that it gummed up and stopped working within about a year. I thought the cleaning fluid was a scam, but it turns out it was actually necessary. Bummer.

My second observation is that I never felt properly caffeinated after a Nespresso coffee anyway, and usually had to buy an extra coffee just to keep the headaches at bay. I'd love to see some analysis on how much caffeine gets extracted from one of those little pods, because it feels like about half a shot.

Now I live in Melbourne, so making my own coffee feels rather like cutting my own hair, or perhaps pulling my own teeth.

Swissaire Jan 13, 2015 9:07 pm

Hi Jorgen -

You are getting only 25% of the caffeine in a large Nespresso with capsules, compared to an American-sized coffee mug using a full-grind capable Capresso machine.

I know many who prefer the Nespresso for consistent results, others who think Nespresso is too strong, and others who prefer a large cup of "anything" as long as it's in a mug.

yes, I find the caffeine to be relatively weak in nespressos. I have one at the office, but at home I have a Rancilio Silvia (on a timer so its hot when I wake up). The rancilio end product is *vastly* superior to the nespesso. Once I finally got a triple basket, its even better.

The Spanish (Catalán) company Taurus has jumped in to take advantage of this with their "coffeemotion" machine

Since many of the Thermomix patens also ran out some time ago the same Catalan company has a "Mycook" machine which is very similar. The coffee pod machines and "robot cook" seem to be the most successful kitchen appliances in Spain at the moment.

Back in the 70s one of these

Crema

In case anyone else is interested ..... I found a box of these today. Use by October 2013. Perfect. Crema perfect. Tastes exactly the same as the day they were bought. The use by date in a sealed capsule is totally ignorable.

These machines are therefore ideal for producing fresh coffee for less regular coffee drinkers.

Sorry I haven't done the research but how much do Nespresso pods cost in the USA?

Also, I'm figuring out whether I can order some online and get them delivered to my hotel - got an upcoming trip to Washington DC.

I drink a lot of Nespresso these days. I have a machine in my office and I consume 2 pods a day on average.

0:30 mark of this video, you see my small machine, perfect for individual use.

PS - Oh! I think the nespresso capsules in the USA are about the same price as in Singapore, so no point me getting them in the USA. The capsules are significantly cheaper in Europe.

I've got the vertuoline and they're $1.10 each for the coffee and something like 80 or 90˘ for espresso capsules.

Refillable Nespresso Pods

Does anyone have a recommendation for a refillable Nespresso Pod? My mom recently retired and would like to travel with her machine (inspired by Swissaire here). She will be going on a few longer trips that may not include larger cities where there is a Nespresso Boutique (or a Nespresso in that country) and carrying a large stack of sleeves might not be the best option for her.

I just bought her a Pixie Clips unit for her travels and am making a carrying case for it as the original Nespresso one is sold out.

Since the thread over here got locked:
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/trave...nespresso.html

I got an Inissia open box for $50 on eBay and found that this Lewis & Clark packing cube is just the right size when expanded for putting in my bag: http://amzn.to/2fBgiQq

I don't travel long enough to worry about a refillable capsule, but it's worth noting that you can buy a sleeve at a time from Amazon for about a 30% markup.

Thanks for the recommendation of the cube. I just ordered it. I had originally made a bag from a train case and some pick-n-pack foam but this is much lighter and easier to put in her suitcase.

Prices of Nespresso pods were reduced in Singapore by about 30% late last year. We started drinking more. On a recent trip to the UK, we saw a Lattissima machine was on sale at ARGOS and we brought one back to Singapore with us. (Singapore, being an ex-British colony, has the same power supply).

Very happy with my new machine. Those Nespresso Recipe glasses fit nicely too.

TravelerMSY Jan 14, 2017 9:32 pm

I go with a Saeco machine at home (Jura before that) but Nespresso pods sure are good in hotels.

LoveHateRelationship Oct 24, 2017 4:29 pm

Did anyone buy the Explorations 2 coffees? They were $40 for 2 sleeves in Canada which seems incredibly pricey. Are these new ones any good?

Nespresso Pro

you can check the video on youtube for nespresso pro pods by moneyworldstore

in the USA, the Target chain has started carrying third party Nespresso pods, both from Peet's Coffee and from their own Archer Farms store brand.

I have also seen some at Kroger under their Private Selection brand. I recently got this brand on Amazon and it has proved to be pretty good, https://rossocaffe.com/

Does anyone have an experience with the Nespresso Essenza Mini Piano , for original capsules? It's their newest smallest machine. I had bought my mum a Nespresso Pixie Clips 2 years back for Christmas for her travels. She has requested the newest smallest version for Christmas this year because it's lighter (1.6 lbs) and smaller. The version she is interested in is the rectangular one not the triangular one.

Does anyone have experience with the new model both at home and on the road? I've read some conflicting reviews online.

tcl Nov 16, 2018 10:27 am

If anyone is looking for a second machine, Lord & Taylor has the Inissia on sale for US$51.97 It's not as small nor light as the new Piano but it's a sturdy machine.

I apologize if this question is answered in the previous 200+ posts...

We are not coffee drinkers - at all. However, when we moved to Arizona and bought a big house, we were planning on lots of visitors from the great nortth. So, we bought a Nespresso machine for our coffee drinking friends and relatives. We had a few visitors and then the pandemic. Now, however, "reservations" are picking up again.

Here is the question. All that coffee we bought is now past the "best by" date (end of 2020). Is it still good or do we need to buy new stuff?

I once drank a capsule that was several years old and it didn't taste funny, so I think you are fine.

The capsules are vacuum sealed so unless they have a leak, they'll maintain the integrity of the coffee inside. Also, if you're curious, enlist a coffee drinker to do a taste test for you - or do it yourself .

Thanks for the suggestion, however, I doubt that my tastes of coffee in my entire life would add up to a single cup. So, my taste test wouldn't mean a thing. I do have a cousin who is coming to dinner this weekend. I'll ask her to take the test! :)

I remembered the post because, at the time, we had expired capsules, and rather than throwing them out, we used them and they seemed fine to us as well.

My french press screen grew mold from perpetual use for coffee and (mostly) tea. Boiled it in baking soda water, vinegar water, and used baking soda + toothbrush to no avail. And since I was using it at least twice per day, having to hand wash it often wasted so much precious California water. I broke down and bought a Vertuo Pop+ from Nespresso this holiday season. It came with the Aeroccino 3, three sleeves of Stormio (2) and Bianco Doppio (1), plus the standard sample pack and 2-capsule Barista pack for $120 total. It's so convenient and fun trying the various capsules, saving the espresso pods for affogato.

One burning question, I ordered a capsule recycling bag, but it seems like I could break open the used pods, scrape the grounds into the compost bin (for yard waste pick up), and throw the clean aluminum capsules into curbside recycling, no?
