I watched the romantic comedy How Do You Know over the weekend and I noticed Reese Witherspoon and her friend were eating Five Guys somewhere in DC. I nudged my date and said "they're eating Five Guys!". She didn't care :(

5 Guys

Are there any 5 Guys in any other airports than LGA?

IAD has at least 1. It's in the UA regional shack known as terminal A. I believe there may also be one in terminal B but don't quote me on that.

If I remember correctly, IAD also has the only Chipotle that serves breakfast.

Supposedly one in DCA, but I've never actually seen it, since I fly out of the AS/DL gates.

violist Jan 4, 2011 8:44 am

No surprise that the Washington airports have 'em -
the one at National is in north pier (US Air) at gate 41.
Two at Dulles - A4, which has speedy service, and off
in the hinterlands at B71, which I've seen ground to a
halt, so I've never used it.

When the expanded Terminal 2 at RDU opens (Scheduled for January 23rd) there will be one there.

There's one in the USAir concourse. To date my only 5 Guys experience. Good, but not greast (I didn't order fries). I am willing to accept that in-airport locations are less good than those outside of airports. No peanuts at DCA, I should add.

Nor at LGA.

One opened near me in the South Bay, but I haven't eaten there yet. I have eaten at a Five Guys, but in DC. This one is located a couple blocks from an In-n-Out Burger too.

Yeah, that's the first airport one I saw, it's right in the USAir gates.

Oooh, I love Five Guys! They blow away in-n-out burger any day! ^

hl78 Jan 6, 2011 8:37 am

They should have stayed local to the DC area, expanded way too quickly.

Scanner Lady Nancy Jan 6, 2011 9:21 am

Yuck, I can't stand Five Guys -- way too greasy and overpriced

richinaz Jan 6, 2011 10:38 am

They recently opened several locations in Scottsdale (and possibly other areas). My impressions are:
1. Significantly more expensive than In-N-Out.
2. I prefer Five Guys fries
3. In-N-Out does an exceptional job in keeping their restaurants clean and their employees are very polite. So far I don't see the same with In-N-Out.

Even getting the "little" burger at Five Guys I end up spending around $8. Getting the double burger at In-N-Out runs around $6. This includes drink and fries. Obviously you get more fries at Five guys but it is more of an order for two people to share.

Personally I don't think In-N-Out has anything to worry about.

empedocles Jan 6, 2011 11:37 am

I finally got around to trying Five Guys last week. Meh.

The fries were good. My big issue with the burger is the bun. It's the same bun I get at Jack in the Box. If I'm paying 7 bux for a burger, I expect a decent bun.

Note that 5 guys in the non-hellhole terminal at IAD.

I think there might even be 2 of them in the A/B terminal but not 100% sure.

Maybe he should just stay home since there are more than a dozen in his own back yard. :D

Our first exposure to 5 Guys was during a trip to Orlando a few years back. I teeter on liking and really liking their burgers. Definitely don't love them. I HAVE to get an In-N-Out burger any time I'm in the vicinity of one whereas I'd like to stop at a 5 Guys on the way back from Seattle. Heck, there are two 5 Guys in the Vancouver lower mainland and I haven't been to either of them yet.

They're a good tasting burger but they are a bit mushed together/sloppy. We generally order the little burgers too. Find the double patties a bit too much meat. Like their fries better than I-N-O tho.

Slightly OT but do you know if Ricky's Big Philly which closed last year on Indian School Road due to a landlord dispute has moved or reopened? Their Philly style cheese steaks were wonderful.

FLgrr Jan 7, 2011 2:46 pm

It is just a burger

Five guys is nothing special. Big portion, better than McD's and Bugger Death. No where near as good as Cheeburger Cheeburger. Sadly many CCs I know have died in FL. I wonder if it is cause of 5G? I am in Tampa. it is a local company. I wont go - Square One here is far better. But if I was somewhere and it was about the only choice, like I said in the beginning, better than others.

Lots of my west coast friends swore by In-N-Out Burger, but me being from the east coast, it just seems different. The fresh cut from potato fries are just utterly disappointing in my opinion. Every time it just tastes like it's been sitting a bit too long in the fryer. And they don't serve much of it for a single portion. Five Guys serves you a more than generous portion, almost filling half a bag full of Five Guys Fries. The burger there doesn't blow me away, but it's quite good. For me though, I'll take Five Guys over In-N-Out any day.

Jimgotkp Jan 7, 2011 5:46 pm

Personally I think Five Guys is overrated and overpriced. I would rather save some money by grilling my own custom burger up outside. It's tastes a lot better and is as fresh as it can be.

You must be grinding your own beef.

What's the matter with that? I grind my beef all the ti.....Uh, er, never mind.

For those asking, there are 2 Five Guys in IAD. One is located across from gate B71 in the "new" part of the B terminal.

The other is located in the A terminal, where the majority of the United Express flights leave from.

As to Reagan, there's one in C past security, all the way down the end on the left.

ssb2045 Feb 10, 2011 9:57 am

I've been known to hit up the Five Guys at DCA and LGA for breakfast before a 7am flight. Something about it still hits the spot that early in the morning.

I agree that it's not the "best" burger in the world, but for a fast food burger it's definitely up there. The variety of toppings and generous portions of fries are a big plus, as are the made-on-the-spot burgers compared to the heatlamp, premade kind you get at McDonalds or BK.

greg0ire Feb 10, 2011 11:12 am

I wrote many pages ago how inferior it was to In N Out. I went a second time with the family and actually had a much better experience. The burger wasn't as greasy and is still second to the chain mentioned above, but it does not deserve my harsh criticism. The fries are way better than In N Out.

dchristiva Feb 10, 2011 11:41 am

Given that they seem to have expanded to just about every neighborhood, I shouldn't be surprised, but I hear that they are opening a location in downtown White Plains. Good news for me, given that I like Five Guys, and it'll be much better than the goofy Westchester Burger joint that opened a few months ago.

Question about 5G Fries- Can anyone finish a regular serving of their fries by themselves? Maybe I just can't eat like I used to, but I find it pretty difficult to finish the whole regular serving by myself. I don't have help either, SO won't touch them (veg/vegan, but she comes along because I ask her too ;) )

Even two people who finish one regular order of their fries are pigs (meant in the nicest way).

Steph3n Feb 13, 2011 8:20 am

I can't eat more than 5-6 fries....and that is dipping them in malt vinegar.

now they are better than the fries at McD, BK, Whataburger, etc, but I just can't do fries much these days.

there is a local joint that does sweet potato fries that I can handle a lot better, but even they get old after a couple.

Darren Feb 13, 2011 9:18 am

Sigh....what I wouldn't give for a big, juicy burger with salty, malty fries right now.

In fact, I would be happy with beef that came from an animal that at least moo'd through it's hopefully happy but short life or beef that doesn't need quotation marks ("Beef").

Actually, I can, but there's a caveat. The closest 5G to me is a 16 mile bike ride on my fixie, so I have a 32 mile RT with several steep hills to ameliorate the disturbing caloric intake. This is the only way i allow myself to partake is the salty, meaty deliciousness of 5G.

qoodoo Feb 13, 2011 10:18 pm

I am a lifelong fan of In n Out being from California and growing up in LA...but they opened 5G's near the PHX and EV areas near my parents home and whenever I come to visit my younger teenage sister asks to go there...to me its just ok...but they seem to love it.

I dislike their cajun fries...but the regular fries with malt vinegar are good. First time I actually had the burgers...I asked for jalapenos thinking it would be pickled...holy crap was I surprised when it was fresh cut jalapenos...hahaha

Also their hot dog isn't half bad.

The Five Guys at the expanded RDU Terminal 2 is now open! ^

I used to love 5 Guys when I initially moved down to the Mid-Atlantic, but it seems like now I get nauseos every other time I eat there. I'm a huge meat-eater, but maybe 5 Guys is just too greasy for me.
