What happened to the tomatoes?

I got a salad a Arby's today and they had a sign saying they were not serving any tomatoes and said it was because of advice from the FDA. Baloney. The FDA emphatically says grape tomatoes are perfectly safe and that is what Arby's normally puts in their salads.

Are other restaurants not serving the kinds of tomatoes that FDA says are safe but using the FDA as their excuse?

Imports of Mexican tomatoes (plus some domestics) have stopped due to salmonella fears. In-and-Out wasn't serving tomatoes this past week in LA.

Lots of restaurants have pulled them, around my office not a single salad bar had any, but a couple of markets had only grape tomatoes

There have been many stories about why they are completly ignoring the FDA and not bringing any back.

They just don't believe what the FDA is telling them, and the absoulte last thing they want is somebody getting sick from a tomato they served. Burger King, Outback, Taco Bell, and many others have pulled them.

And as one person said, they can't get any from the suppliers, the ones that have been cleared will take some time to make it down the chain.

Many restaurants have pulled them from the menu but the supermarkets have oodles of tomatoes for sale.

Seems like there are tons of folks out there who look for any opportunity to sue restaurant chains and don't hesitate manufacturing problems. The lack of tomatoes in restaurants may be a self-preservation maneuver.

I was in a Fuddruckers last Thursday (Pembroke Pines, FL), and they had a nice large tray of sliced tomatoes in the condiments area. A sign had been posted stating (words to the effect) that they had sourced the tomatoes from a trusted local source that was not in any way affected by the recall.
