Best Biscuits and Gravy

Maybe not gourmet food, but one of my favorite things for breakfast, and breakfast is my favorite meal of the day usually. I've had them all over the US for 30+ years, and much to my surprise the best IMO are not in the South as I expected. In fact, with rare exceptions it has been hard to get even decent ones in the Dixie states. Nice flaky buttermilk biscuits with sausage gravy..mmm. So, where do they do it best? Gasp! The Pacific Northwest! Oregon and Washington, with California slightly behind. Arizona, Nevada, and Colorado - not bad either.

So, for any and all B&G aficionados out there, Where are the best served?
Specific restaurants that excel would be great too.

Even though I rate CA at 3rd overall, the best I have ever had in my life can be found at Katrina's Cafe in Auburn, CA. (wish I still lived near there) Second best would be Le Peep in CO.

Wow, I'm amazed that you've gotten it so many places! I miss it when I leave the midwest/south.

My tops:
Fast food: Hardee's
National Chain: Bob Evans
Homemade: My grandmother's kitchen

I had forgotten about Bob Evans. They are about the best I've had in the South, or east of the rockies for that matter.

Yeah, they're about the best as fair as chains go.

Have you found any other chains worth having? Cracker Barrel is decent, but not amazing.

Hardee's has the best biscuits, hands down, especially when they're well done to have a crispy top and bottom.

fatfrog Jun 13, 2008 3:00 pm

Has anyone been to Biscuit King/World/?? (I forgot the full name) either in or near Beckley, WV? We went after rafting one weekend, and their biscuits were goooood!

BiziBB Jun 13, 2008 9:00 pm

McDonald's has biscuits on its aussie brekky menu but I'd guess Aussies go for the muffins in a much bigger way.

Can anyone give a report on Sunrise Biscuit, E. Franklin St, Chapel Hill?
Better still, Time Out Chicken, W. Franklin St?
It might have been 17yrs ago but I still remember. :D

jswadley Jun 13, 2008 9:11 pm

Burger King is indeed good, but not in the same league as Hardee's. Now, the Croissants are another issue. :-)

cordelli Jun 13, 2008 9:13 pm

There's a place up the street that makes great home made biscuits, though not with gravy. They usually serve them with cheese scrambled eggs and some great corned beef hash.

It's wonderful to make a couple of little open faced sandwiches out of them.

Not greasy, not coated in dry flour (hate that), lightly grilled.

May know what I'm ordering should we hit them tomorrow.

The very best ones always seem to be at the hole-in-the-wall places or truck stops. I don't know how big a chain it is, but Huddle House in Abingdon VA had some decent ones. Dennys are so-so if you order sausage separately and add it. I can't think of any chains that are as good as Bob Evans. I don't care for Cracker Barrel's gravy at all. It's the typical style of the south like Shoneys.

Tudor's Biscuit World
perhaps? They are a WV based chain. Their biscuits are decent if you're into the real fluffy, fall apart as you eat them, variety. Hardee's blows them away.

The only advantage to Tudor's is that they serve their breakfast biscuits for lunch too. When I teach near BKW in the early afternoons, I'll often frequent the one near the airport for a Mary B (Bacon, Egg and Cheese) for lunch.

Hardees is still so much better IMHO.

This won't hep you now, but there was a place under the Sunshine/Skyway Bridge in St. Pete FL that my sister (who was a student at Eckard Collage) took me to once. I remember the biscuits and gravy fondly.

The place was called Skyway Jacks. It was a real hole-in-the-wall! Sadly they closed several years ago.

I've never eaten breakfast at Hardees. (we're a little short on them in CA) I'll make it a point though next time I'm near one in the AM. Who woulda thunk?

cblaisd Jun 16, 2008 10:59 pm

I have no idea whether it's still there, but 20 years ago when I lived in Monahans, Texas (raise your hand if you know where that is. Thought so :D) the eponymous Biscuits 'n' Gravy Restaurant was to die for.

They would also deliver! And you could run a tab til the end of the month.

Raising hand ;)

Back in the day when Hill's Cafe in South Austin served breakfast, it was my favorite place to get biscuits swimming in sausage gravy.

Time to resurrect this one.

Amy's in Eureka, CA. Breakfast and lunch joint that doesn't open till 11.
Small place, husband and wife are the only employees. Killer homemade biscuits and gravy. Among the best I've had. Everything else I've tried is top notch as well.

Update: Long time (30 years) favorite #1 Katrina's in Auburn, CA has changed ownership and unfortunately their B&G have suffered greatly. No longer on the list at all.

What's the address for Amy's? I'll be up there this weekend.

Thanks for the link. I may try them for dinner tonight. Yeah, I know, no B&G, but I've been looking for another restaurant to try.

Looks like weekend hours are 7a-2p.

My local breakfast favorite has some decent B & G...more than decent. They're a real gut bomb.

We visit Eureka quite often in the summer and find the restaurants quite good there overall. Arcata is even better. Halibut fish & chips (not on the menu) at Gallagher's Irish Pub is outstanding enough that we've had it 20+ times now.

Back to biscuits & gravy now.:)

Elmo's Diner in Durham, NC does the best I've had.

Mary2e Feb 26, 2017 8:36 am

I've had some pretty good B&G at a couple of the Disney resorts - Trail's End at Fort Wilderness and Chef Mickey's in the Contemporary Resort. I think others serve it as well, but I've only had it in those 2 places.

And at Trail's End I can get an order to go. I love my B&G.

I also had it in North Carolina and I recall it being very good as well.

Hardee's does have good biscuits. I do enjoy the biscuits from KFC. The gravy that comes with the mashed potatoes goes very well with the biscuits. Of course, homemade biscuit and gravy is wonderful.

Lenny's in Clearwater, FL.

I know it is pure artificial crap but for some reason I love KFC mashed potatoes and gravy. It's kind of like loving Jack in the Box tacos.

Peabody Hotel | Memphis

Years ago I had breakfast in the Peabody and the biscuits and gravy were excellent. I recall they told me that they use full cream in making the gravy. It was so rich I had difficulty finishing it. But it was great.
