Themed Restaurants - a flash in the pan or would you take a seat?
Juvenile bathroom humour must be a pretty international thing, based on the success of toilet-themed restaurants and chains.
It sounds odd but seems to work for this entrepreneur. ...the Modern Toilet diner is one of chain of themed eateries appealing to largely young clientele with a toilet humour Customers eat from mini plastic toilet bowls. They wipe their hands and mouths using toilet rolls hung above their tables, which may be glass-topped jumbo bathtubs. Owner Wang Tzi-wei opened his first Modern Toilet in 2004 after being inspired by a Japanese cartoon featuring restroom images and the toilet themes run through the food and drinks menus. Modern Toilet draws on people ages 15 to 35, especially students from the three universities near Yang's facilities because they're "easily excited." ...Managers say the restaurant's popularity shows that Taipei customers, who have a choice of theme-eateries that resemble jailhouses and hospitals, appreciate creative dining. [News.com.au] Gallery: Please take a (toilet) seat... Would you try an establishment which brings the bathroom out into the restaurant (thematically if not literally)? |
I cannot picture taking a date out to sit on a toilet while we have dinner. Maybe because I'm no longer 15. I'd like to see the clientele - I'm picturing the crowd of guys that spend Saturday afternoon playing Yugi-oh at Books a Million. One in 50 is a girl, but no one notices.
Reminds me of a Simpson's episode where Homer invents a recliner/toilet. |
I had dinner at the Modern Toilet a few months ago in Tainan City.
Food is horrible but it was a memorable experience. They had Chinese and Korean style Hot Pot as the main menu only because it is one of the few foods you can place in a toilet looking dish. They have this dessert that comes in a little toilet, chocolate ice cream with brown fudge chunks, coffee edibles etc. It was kind of gross but this was very good to eat. It caters to a very young crowd. Loud music and flashing disco lights. The toilet I got to sit on had a see through plexi lid that flashed. Which was annoying but it was a conversation starter for a month. |
In Sydney, such a place would not even make it through one night.
Just imagine boozed-up groups of students or mates after work. Lots of drinking --> Toilets --> ;) say no more |

A themed restaurant for FTers!
Today's local newspaper carried another interesting restaurant (in Taiwan).
How appropriate for FT DiningBuzz. It probably qualifies as a 'restaurant in the middle of nowhere', considering it's in an office block. ;) No turbulence at A380 superjumbo restaurant [SMH] Imagine boarding a plane without security checks or even tickets and more importantly, there's more than just fish or chicken for dinner. Set in a dull commercial building in central Taipei, the A380 In-Flight Kitchen looks and functions like an airline in many ways, expect that it serves a regular restaurant menu of Western food, sometimes in plastic trays. (Photos: Inside the A380 restaurant) Since November, the restaurant has been packing in wannabe passengers, who sit in soft speckled blue seats with headrests covered in white napkins and under oval-shaped windows. Locked white baggage compartments hang overhead. The restaurant, in Taipei's university quarter, opened after owner Yang Mao-hui figured that he could ride some of the Airbus A380's recent fame in the aviation industry by offering a simulated experience, Lu said. The diner decor cost about T$7 million (A$310,000), she added. ...Airbus has no actual stake in the restaurant, Lu said. Taiwan has a smorgasboard of theme diners, including one modeled after a hospital ward, one that holds puppet shows and two that seat customers on toilet bowls. |
Chains
Here's my reservation about themed restaurants: restaurant chains.
My only issue with a themed restaurant has been when a themed restaurant, from a chain, pushes out/closes excellent local restaurants. My case in point: a local (formerly fun & cosy, character pub) restuant/pub in Dublin. Formerly housing a TGI Fridays - that's fine. Now the chain has closed/remodelled the old pub into a TGIF bar, complete with cheesy staff cowboy outfits. No more quiet pub - and they close the bar at 10PM... That's starting time for many people! [I'm all for unusual restaurants - but hate it when my local becomes part of a really cheesy theme chain. :D] |
I'd like to try that toilet one some day.

Numbers Two
Lowender1234,
Note the A380 story mentions on the last line of my quote that there are two toilets to eat in. :D Modern Toilet and (presumably) 'Vintage' or 'Kitschy' Toilet. :p Note that Taiwaned kindly reviewed the food, if not the seating. ;) |
