Thanks for the info - maybe I should drink both bottles before I go home and pick up a more mind-blowing example to take with me.

Wow... I continue to be impressed. Did you source all these States-side or have you recently been to EZE...?

The Catena Alta and NCZ were purchased in the US, The rest were flown in over the last few years.

Yes, I think that would be a good idea. If you are going to shlep back a few bottles all the way back home, I would say that you perhaps find something made by a smaller producer... something thats not produced in mass quantities. It may or may not be a more expensive wine... but maybe what I would look for would be a wine that is not only of excellent quality... but a wine that "has a story", and perhaps one that is only available in the Argentine domestic market.

Martas Vinyard

I love Marta’s Vinyard Malbec Reserve 2006 Lujan de Cuyo.

Came across it at a food and drink show and this was by far the nicest wine there and by no means the most expensive.

ABout £10 in the UK so I would guess around $15 in the US

Not sure where you can obtain it in the US, you could try contacting them through the website.

Found this review online - I think you need to add a few more Os to your looooooooooooong if the NCZ blend is anything to go by!!

"98 out of 100...Catena Zapata’s flagship is the Nicolas Catena Zapata, a Cabernet Sauvignon-Malbec blend. The 2004 Nicolas Catena Zapata is composed of 72% Cabernet Sauvignon and 28% Malbec. It spent 18 months in 100% new French oak. A saturated black purple in color, it has an aristocratic perfume of pain grille, mineral, espresso, saddle leather, cassis, black currant, and black raspberry. Opulently textured, complex, ripe, and sweet on the palate, it maintains a sense of elegance as well as power. It demands 10-15 years of further cellaring and should still be providing pleasure at age 50. It strikes me as being Argentina’s equivalent of a great vintage of Lafite-Rothschild." - WA

How does this fall into the "Malbec" category? ;)

Good catch... the devil is in the details. I guess the angle here is that Catena Zapata is best know as a producer of some of the top Malbec made in Argentina.

FWIW, the Malbec equivalent of the Nicolas Catena Zapata is the Catena Zapata Malbec Argentino.... this way made its debut in the 2004 vintage and has received rave reviews from Wine Spectator and The Wine Advocate.

Any experience with Achaval-Ferrer Finca Mirador 2006 Malbec?

At $60/pop, I'm in for 2...

$60 a bottle for a single vineyard Achaval Ferrer is a steal. The 2006 vintage is an amazing year, but there is no need to hurry.... will be best from 2010.

If you like the Achaval style, I suggest you seek out the Dolce dessert wine.
