Whatever happened to stacking cans?
 

Stocked the cupboard the other day with lots of broths, soups, some canned fruit and noticed that none of the new cans had those bottoms that nested in the tops of other cans. None. Just a while ago, it seemed like most of the cans had these bottoms that stacked nicely, now none. When did this happen? Why?

Also, what's happened to frozen whole leaf spinach? Chopped spinach abounds, but hard to find leaf spinach. Is this due to the E-Coli mess a year or two ago?

These are important questions. I want answers! :D

I've been wondering this exact same thing for a while now (none of the London supermarkets I go to ever seem to have leaf spinach in the freezers anymore :().

No leaf spinach here in the UAE, either. Actually, I can't even find fresh spinach most of the time here. Frustrating, since my favorite kind of salad requires spinach. :(

re: cans, yeah I've been wondering that, too. But I try not to have a lot of food at home (something about carrying cost of inventory... I really had a passion for my business school curriculum!), so I guess not being able to stack them is not the end of the world for me.

Australia's #1 grocer/supermarket operator models its inventory management on Wal-Mart's. :eek: Whatever can be done to lower costs, especially to reduce manual and double handling, will be done.

A new-ish low cost competitor here, Aldi, just dispenses with shelves, so stock just sits on the pallets. It's effectively a micro- warehouse located in the shopping centre. LCC indeed!

That said, when I visited a Wal Mart for the first time last year I felt no desire to return. ;)
