Search for the world's best pies
Pie afficionados (and Aussies everywhere :D),
Where in the world are the best pies you've tried? Here are a few in Australia. The search for our best pie Notable bakeries in Oz... Parkers Pies, Rutherglen, VIC Hot Bake and Early Rise, NSW Sunrise Bakery, Ettamogah Pub, Sunshine Coast QLD Miami Bakehouse, Mandurah WA Richmond Bakery, TAS Adelaide Casino, SA (^^) |
I was thinking Hwy 61 at almost any small cafe/diner along the north shore of Lake Superior for tremendous fruit pies.
Can't say I have a meat pie that stands out, I know I have not tried many of them. The Duke of Perth Scottish pub in Chicago has a good one IMO but probably doesn't hold a candle to the places you've mentioned. More info on this pub: http://chicago.metromix.com/bars-and...136444/content -- |
A perfect pie can't just have tasty filling but must have a perfect, light flaky crust. Mom's Apple Pies of Leesburg is as close to perfection as I have even found.
|
Does this have to be a desert sweet pie or could it be those baked non-sweet pies such as those chicken pot pies I normally consume at Swiss Chalet in Toronto?
|
I guess you could find some pies here in the deserts of Australia, but they'd be consumed in the evening when it gets quite cold.
Comment on any pies as long as they include some kind of pastry top, and leave the 'pizza pie' finds in the pizza thread. :) To answer your question, yes feel free to add you al-American apple pie purveyors and anything else which has tasty pastry and can be picked up and eaten with one hand. ^ |
There are some excellent pies to be had Porters in London's Covent Garden - a restaurant which also proves there is such a thing as English cuisine.
http://www.porters.uk.com/menu/default.asp?menuID=13 However, nothing quite beats the delights of consuming a piping hot pie of unknown origin whilst watching your Third Division football team being hammered by the league leaders on a freezing Saturday in January. Happy days. |
I submit that if each of you came to my house and had some of my coconut cream pie, you'd find it worthy of mention in this thread.
Yes, it's that good. No, I'm not really that arrogant. Otherwise, I've had some EXCELLENT pies (much due to the exceptionally flaky crust) at Sissy's Uptown Cafe in Lompoc, CA. |

Penny's pies at the Rock Springs Cafe in Black Canyon City, Az. Her pies are famous around the state. Of course, they are also famous for the Hogs N Heat BBQ and Nut fry:D
|
Hate to say it, but the best pies may be the frozen Sarah Lee Signature Selection fruit pies (note this is only Signature Selection pies, not other imposters with slightly different names in the Sarah Lee line). The crust is exquisite when eaten an hour or so after baking. Not so bad a day or two later.
Unfortunately, these pies (rated # 1 frozen by Consumer Reports) have also been rated by the Center for Science in the Public Interest as dangerous to your heart due to vast amounts of transfat etc. Still, a few slices a year can't hurt? IMHO, the German Apple with strussel top is the best. :) |
I've never been but have ordered my share online and can heartily recommend the cherry pies from the Grand Traverse Pies Co
http://www.gtpie.com/ I can't recall the name of the place but the best coconut cream pie I've ever had was in a small Mexican restaurant in Raton NM pie......:D |

I'll bring along some of my key lime pie, made with freshly squeezed key lime juice and topped with whipped cream made from real cream (not that plastic Kool Whip stuff). Yummm.... Can't say that I've ever had pie at a restaurant that compares to my key lime pie, or my wife's apple pie. |
Anywhere in Yorkshire (within reason) will get you wonderful meat pies. Not pork pies, not Cornish pasties, but a whole new experience.
|
I think the pastry is the most important when it comes to meat pies - I've really struggled to find a good pie in the UK though Greggs do some that are quite simple and the sausage rolls at Upper Crust at the train stations are good as well. Otherwise you really have to go to NZ or Australia for a good meat pie though I've noticed that they've started to get a bit adventurous with the fillings!

My two finalists....
As much as I love the Yatala Pie Shop, and their Steak, Bacon, and Cheese, I have two that tie for first place:
Humble Pie do a Thai Chicken pie to die for. Goldsteins on the Gold Coast do a Lambs Fry & Bacon pie that is just the ducks nuts! |
