American supermarkets have become a massive distributor of sushi, with grocery stores selling 43.7 million servings of sushi, a massive number compared to the 238.6 million servings of sushi distributed by restaurants in the United States. Sales volumes of sushi at retailers are up 50 percent year over year, and on a dollar sales basis up 72 percent. One supermarket in particular — Kroger — has really pursued sushi as a market, slinging what it said was 40 million pieces of sushi in a typical year across Kroger, Ralphs, Smith’s and Harris Teeter, with its sushi business alone estimated to generate $400 million to $600 million in sales.Jaewon Kang, The Wall Street Journal |
Asian supermarket sushi... One of the handiest gaming snacks I had when gaming online with friends back in the day. If I could figure out how to keep it safe while in transit, I would bring it on board those iffy flights... Seeing increases in complaints about food not getting loaded.
Also handy to make impromptu fried rice from if you forget to defrost food for dinner. |
Super market sushi is what got me into sushi in the first place in the early 2000s. The King Soopers near my school started selling it and I began by just getting salmon nigiri which I loved. Eventually, I branched out and started doing tuna and then a roll or two. Nowadays, I LOVE sushi and try to eat it as often as I can. I've never done gas station sushi :eek: , but have had very pleasant experiences with sushi at Whole Foods and Wegmans. Sprouts is also quite good, though Hy-Vee probably has some of the best around here (for comparable super markets).

I don't like the sushi/maki from Jewel/Albertsons. Whether it was just made, it still tastes stale. Marianos is just a little better. I like the products at Korean supermarkets most of the time as there is one less than 10 mins from my house and I find it more consistent. IMO, you have to eat it as soon as possible after it is made.

Publix employees, as a rule are friendly and helpful. But the folks making sushi there (who may not actually be Publix employees) go a step beyond. I almost never stop by the sushi display without one coming out to greet me and ask if I need help, have questions, or want something not in the display. The product is consistent, if bland for the most part. And still $5 on Wednesday I believe, as long as you are satisfied with the 3 or 4 standard varieties. I pick up a bunch whenever I visit my grandchildren, who love the stuff.
