Non-alcoholic beers
 

This thread is prompted by a recent OMNI discussion. I searched back a year and didn't spot any discussion of NA beers.

I once went 17 years between beers. At no point in those 17 years did I stop going to bars or craving the taste of beer. So, I tried any and all non-acloholic beers I could find. Not surprisingly, I found most of them awful. When you don't like the brewer's alcoholic version, chances are good it will taste worse without a buzz.

I remember drinking Sharps, O'Douls, Kaliber, Becks (?), Coors, and a bunch of others. I found O'Douls tolerable and it's good thing because that's about all you'll find in most bars. I think the one I drank regularly at home was Carling.

I realize this is a "kiss your sister" post, but I'm curious if anyone else regularly drinks NA beer and enjoys it.

That's like asking if anyone flies coach middle seats internationally and enjoys it!:)

And I'm guessing that they're out there too. Craving a human touch and unable to secure one through regular channels, they book the middle seat and press their thighs on their neighbors for 10 hours straight. :eek:

Not exactly Bama. A previous co-worker of mine loves to travel and weighs in at about 110 #'s. When she sits in a coach seat, it looks like me sitting one of those new SQ business seats. As for people invading here space, watch it; she can be a mean lady (nice as heck, but takes no crap).

Back OT, you listed all the knock-offs I can remember. They don't taste right, and no benefit of the aforementioned Buzz. Beer is one of those things that the real deal is the only way to go.

Occasionally I have tried one but never could drink the whole bottle. I do enjoy many European beers and I have found generally the higher the alcohol % the better the beer.

I drink O'Douls every now and then when I crave the taste of beer, but don't want or can't consume alcohol. And yes, I know you can never quite get all the alcohol out. ;)

They have two types now, but I've only tried the one in the green can.

I've still yet to try any NA beer. Will look for some this weekend. :)

I want the NA beers that taste the closest to Corona, Sapporo, Asahi, and Fat Tire.

If you EVER find an N/A beer that tastes like Fat Tire, please let me know. (That goes for all of you!)

Amen. Gregg, this may be off-topic, but what other New Belgium brews do you like besides Fat Tire? They seem to have quite a few others from what I can tell by shopping at the local HEB.

Go ahead, rub it in. Fat Tire is only distributed to 15 states. More to the point, neither Fat Tire nor any other New Belgium beer is sold in my part of the country. :(

To give you a more serious answer, I have never had a beer from NBB (New Belgium Brewing) that I didn't think highly of. For general drinking, I'd probably point to their Fat Tire flagship, the Mothership Wit and 1554 Brussels Black Ale. For special occasions, NBB's La Folie would be on my very short list of beers from anywhere in the world. Why is it called "the folly"? Because it's a beer that costs them more to make than they possibly can sell it for. But this limited edition beer (only 3,000 750ml bottles a year if I remember correctly) isn't about making a profit, it's about making the best beer they can and hang the expense.

And if you're ever near Ft. Collins, take in a movie or take the brewery's tour.

Wow. I had no idea. I figured if you guys could get Shiner Bock, then you could also get Fat Tire. You can get Shiner Bock...right? :eek:

But, thanks for the suggestions nonetheless. Spiff and I might have to make a road trip to Ft. Collins in October 2008. ;)

As part of a little experiement back in college, my buddies and I had a keg of O'Douls wanting to see would know the difference, and more importantly, begin to act intoxicated. No one noticed the difference, and many got "drunk". Meanwhile, my friends and I had a ball watching this all transpire.

The bevmo stores out here in southern california have bitburger and warsteiner non alcoholic. When I know ill have a hectic day the next day ill relax with those two since they taste like the real thing. Its also funny to give one to a person who already has had three plus beers and just watch them think there drunk

I'll have to look for them in my travels. One of my regular Hiltons has been known to leave a couple Warsteiners in my room in a ice bucket with a branded pilsner glass and opener. I can't get it here. If their NA is similar in taste, I'd actually enjoy it.
