OK, for you LA Koreans/Korean food lovers--now I have occasion to drive through Koreatown every day on the way home from work, so what's worth stopping in for and bringing home? (Come to think of it, my better half is out of town all next week at a convention, so I can even meet one/some of you for dinner if we can get an impromptu FT Kimchi DO together. :D )

You really don't have to twist my arm too hard to get me to drive to K-Town :D

Just give me the word...:)

Stopped by Kyochon today and got wings...delicious! But I think I need to learn some Korean--would make getting around in K-Town a little easier. ;)

I'd definitely make a trip to LA to taste Korean food.

In Phoenix, there's a couple that I frequent at least once a week. Seoul Jung for their Mul Nyaeng-myun and Galbi special. Some of the best nyaeng-myun and galbi that I've had. Unfortuantely, not a fan of their kimchi or anything else on their menu. Then there's Takamatsu, a mile away, thats a Korean/Japanese hybrid. Almost everything there is good, including the ban-chan, except for their nyaeng-myun and galbi.

For the more adventurous palates, try Yang-ji tang, if they have it. Basically a really spicy soup with tripe and sometimes chitlins. There is also Gamja-tang. Literal translation is Potato Stew, but it has pork neck bones in there. Messy one to eat. For the not-so adventurous, the above suggestions are very good (dolsot bibim-bap being one of my favorites) but also look at Duk Mandoo Gook and Mandoo Gook. The former has rice cakes and dumplings in a soup while the latter is just the dumplings in a soup.

I love going to buffets and beside Il Mee Korean buffet in Annandale, VA, my next favorite is Picnic Garden in Flushing, NY.

And speaking about Picnic Garden, I'll be there Sunday. I'm going to fast until then :p

We've had a few Dos at Soot Bull Jeep when SweetWillie has been in town; sounds like we're overdue for a Korean Food Do - will post something in Community about that.

Right now, with the heat what it is in SoCal, sitting over a hot grill doesn't really sound all that much fun. :)

Agreed...it sounded like a good idea a few days ago, but right now, I think I'd pass. Maybe it will cool off next week.

if you don't mind spicy, go for some soon dooboo jji gae (soon dooboo = soft tofu, jji gae = stew). hot (temp) and spicy and can get with beef, seafood (prawns, muscles, clams, etc), mixed (seafood + beef) or plain. there are a few other varieties and you can request varying levels of spiciness, from white to medium to hot to very hot. don't forget to break your egg in the bowl right when it comes out!

I had this dish right down to the raw egg, at the BCD Tofu house the other night (I went with their "hot" spice level).

I know quite a few Korean restaurants in L.A. but very little in Northern CA. My current favorite is The Tofu House, which I think is part of So-Kong-Dong Tofu. I'm sure there are better soft tofu restaurants in L.A., but I absolutely love The Tofu House.

Is that the place next to Ranch 99 market in Cupertino?

I believe SweetWillie had Korean Do last year.

Here in Toronto, my favorite is Korean Grill - especially the Queen St. location where I always go for the Barbeque buffet grilling whenever I go there.
