Favorite Sushi places - east coast

Hi everyone!
I cover the east coast for my territory and I try to eat sashimi everywhere I go because:
1. I can expense my sushi addiction
2. It's the only consistently healthy meal I can get

Any favorites that I should try in the main cities (NYC, Boston, philly, DC, VA, Charlotte, Atlanta, FL)

So far, I have really liked Shimizu in NYC and Ray's in Atlanta (although that was more seafood)

Soto in Buckhead (ATL) was perhaps one of the finest authenic Japanese resturants in the US. Alas he closed in March of this year to move to New York. Anyone know if he reopened in NY? Soto was the chef and the owner and a true talent at his profession.

My vote goes to Blue Ribbon Sushi in SoHo (NYC).

Believe it or not ... Palm Harbor, FL

I was absolutely stunned, speaking to a very reputable local chef, that Morimoto's (from IRON CHEF) older brother owns a nondescript Japanese restaurant in Palm Harbor, FL.

It was incredible ... small store, ugly strip mall on Tampa Road, only open in the evenings, but packed always and the best, freshest sushi I've had. It's right near the corner of Lake St. George (?) Worth checking out if you're in the Tampa Bay area ...

In Boston there's lots of good sushi/sashimi...ya can't beat Boston for fresh fish :D Some faves of mine are Oishii in Chestnut Hill and Douzo near Back Bay Station. There are other places, search in the Boston board in chowhound.com for more discussion.

My very favorite Boston neighborhood sushi joint is....nah, I can't tell you :p but it is very near Symphony Hall.

Sushi Yama in a shopping center in Boca Raton is pretty good - and its an iDine/Rewards Network place. The deluxe sashimi is very generous and of high quality (and variety).

As far as the S. Florida region:
  • Matsuri
  • Bond St.
  • Nobu

In NYC:

Tomoe Sushi

In PHL:

Morimoto

In DCA:

Sushi Ko (iDine restaurant)

For each of these cities, I've been lucky enough to eat at the finer sushi joints in town, and can say without hesitation that the three places listed above are the best options. Some may argue that Masa is better in NYC, and in response I'd say, that if you have $400 to burn on sushi - go to Masa. Tomoe (located on Thompson St. in the Village) is inexpensive and features some of the freshest fish in town. Tuesday nights are especially good - that's when all the fish from Asia arrive...

$200?

Unless your going to Bar Masa, your bill won't be lower then $400. (Really $530, including tax and tip)

You definitely should, Amy ... actually, for some reason, that area of Palm Harbor has a number of good restaurants (Blue Heron, Mystic Fish, a great vegetarian restaurant, Mecca (my absolute favorite lunch place), Massimo's), but that sushi restaurant is incredible ... but not for atmosphere. In fact, I think the sign just says JAPANESE RESTAURANT.

Try it out and let us know what you think.

BOS

South End & Brookline - Oishii - http://oishiiboston.com/
Brookline - Fugaku - http://www.fugakyu.net/

While Oishii (I've only been to the one in the South End) is very beautiful on the inside, Fugaku has a very odd aesthetic layout. It's almost as if they combined 3-4 uniquely decorated restaurants and threw huge projection screens of nature shots in odd locations. Oishii is substantially more expensive than Fugaku, but they are both excellent!

Dc

Especially for lunch, I would heartily recommend Sakana, on P St. just west of Dupont Circle. It is an unassuming little place, but prices are very reasonable, and the quality is high. I eat there probably twice a month, and it is always hopping, with a good portion of the tables speaking Japanese, which I always take as a good sign in a sushi place. :) If you order three rolls/nigiri/sashimi, you get miso soup and salad for free. Plus, if you want to break your "healthy food" sashimi kick, the Sakana Tempura roll (or as my friends and I call it, Junk Food Sushi), is possibly my favorite food ever!

I would also recommend Kaz Sushi Bistro - more upscale, and although known primarily for inventive rolls, the sashimi & nigiri is also quite good.

I myself have not tried Sushi Ko, which was recommended above (never find myself in that neigborhood), but I have friends who adore it.

In NYC,
Poke (cash only, BYOB)
Sushi Yasuda
Sushi Seki

Gari used to be good, but these days quality has dropped, as is their service. Yama was good, but I haven't been in a while.
