Been a fan of Monkey 47 for quite a while and always bring a few bottles back from Germany. Think I may have preferred it when it was less well known!

Also like g'vine nouaison and an Australian gin called 4 pillars.

It changes the taste of a product if more people know/like it - the taste of exclusivity?

Nope - just the price! :)

Blue Gin from Austria would be my choice. It is made from 27 botanicals by Hans Reisetbauer. Hans Reisetbauer is Austria's most awarded Distiller.

Definitely the BOMBAY SAPPHIRE.

Tanqueray Rangpur. First tried this at Wynn LV and haven't looked back since. It has a slight rangpur lime flavor that makes it great in a martini, G&T, or just on the rocks. ABV 41.3% as opposed to regular Tanqueray which is 47.3%, and it is very smooth.

I used to drink Tanqueray Rangpur quite a bit -- I felt the lime notes got lost when you tried to mix it with anything (including tonic water), but it was great by itself on the rocks.

I tasted it again last week for the first time in over four years. (I just returned from an extended assignment in Singapore, where my gin options were more limited.) Maybe the intervening years have exaggerated my memory of the taste, but it seems like the lime flavor is more subtle than I remember. Still good, though.

Based on some of the comments in this thread, Dad and I opened up a bottle of Tanqueray Rangpur this week. We both thought the citrus flavor was WAY too aggressive. It was almost like it was pre-mixed with Sprite or something.

We were having it plain, on the rocks. I am going to try it as a G&T next, but cannot see myself purchasing any more of it.

Favorite Gin

Not to revive an old thread, but based on this thread I bought a few bottles of monkey 47 when I came across it a little bit ago. The stuff is amazing. Really fantastic. Thanks to all for the rec.

Plymouth is great as is Hendricks. Currently working on a bottle of Brooklyn Gin. Also consider Bootlegger 21.

Seeing the reviews for Minkey, I have to find it.

LondonElite Nov 12, 2015 4:00 am

Monkey 47 is in danger of being a victim of its own success. I understand they're looking for a large US distribution platform currently. Not sure how this is going affect quality, and I can't stand the concept of 'affordable luxury'. Decide where you want to play and stick to it.

With December 1st fast approaching might I recommend the ever so tacky
Gin Advent Calendar.

Just had the limited edition Tanqueray Bloomsbury, very nice.

Just happened by the liquor store today and saw Monkey 47 on sale for $49.99 for 375 ml. Is that the going rate?

durberville Nov 22, 2015 5:57 pm

Ungava gin. It's made in the Canadian North. Uniquely flavoured, and absolutely delicious.

I recently discovered a small gem:

Professor Cornelius Ampleforths Bathtub Gin:

http://static.webshopapp.com/shops/0...-gin-70-cl.jpg

Very heavy on cinnamon but for me (as drinking it neat) a welcoming surprise and very tasty. Wouldn't try to mix it with tonic.

Any of you had Shortcross gin? Lovely drink brewed quite close to me in Northern Ireland.

R.A. Feb 24, 2016 5:15 am

Burnett is my favorite. Also, casting another vote for Gordon's doing just about everything you want it to at an amazingly-low price point

The liquor store attached to my local Costco has 1.75L bottles of Hendrick's for $63. Is that a good deal?

It's okay. I see it for $56.99 at Total Wine, not sure if you have any of those though.

Not got that size available at my local liquor store. Do you drink it garnished with cucumber and diluted with Fever Tree tonic? :)

Thanks for reminding me about cucumber, though it will be Death's Door gin!

Recently brought a few bottles of Monkey 47 Distillers Cut. Very enjoyable, except I don't really think it is worth three times the price of the normal Monkey 47.

Also from Germany - really been enjoying Gin Sul from Hamburg - worth a try. Also brought a bottle of Ferdinand's Saar Dry Gin - nice enough but not really what I'm looking for in a gin.

LondonElite Mar 15, 2016 2:51 am

Along with Gin Sul, you should try Berliner Brandstifter (Arsonist!). Very subtle and floral, despite the name.

fassy Mar 15, 2016 4:42 am

I think Monkey 47 is highly overrated. It has a very distinctive taste and I personally do not like it. For me it tastes like mothballs mixed with industrial alcohol... the worst part being the industrial alcohol taste.

While all other gins I have (about 20 in my cabinet) have a subtle nice alcoholic taste the Monkey reminds me of disinfection fluid. Very sharp alcoholic base, then mixed with some rather weird botanicals.

Last week I picked up another nice one: The Botanist. Very pure gin, nothing too fancy or special but if you are looking for a basic gin of high quality it definitly shines.

My favorites so far after 2 years of tasting an collecting are Marton's Gin and Professor Cornelius Ampleforths Bathtub Gin, casked aged.

Living in Hamburg, Gin Sul is of course part of my collection but it is not a gin for every day/mood. Quite sharp taste I think but enjoyable.

What is the Danish gin they use in the Gin Basil Smash at Le Lion?

Bluecoat then Bombay Sapphire

Found one in the liquor store that spoke to my FlyerTalk heart: "Aviation" Gin.
Also really liked the Art Deco type bottle.

Unfortunately, was not good. It was absent of any particular taste at all. Very bland when drinking on ice. Couldn't imagine it with a mixer...wouldn't taste it at all, I think. It was weird how "nothing" it tasted.

This one might actually just be thrown away...

Looks like horsepiss, doesn't it? Tastes pretty good though.

fassy Apr 13, 2016 3:18 am

It's funny how 'in' gin is nowadays in Germany and Sweden. In every bigger groceries store in Hamburg you'll find 10 to 20 high end gins, in the smaller ones at least 2 to 3. All bars have huge gin menues.

Almost takes the fun out of it since every day you find some new interesting gin. I think my collection is already big enough for a lifetime by now. (Or I need more friends....)

btw, I really do not like the Ungava. Just bought it since they sold it with a cute winter jacket around it :D

Ungava works really well as part of a French 75.

I'm not sure if that pitch is the best one to win their marketing account. :)

Would "tastes like polar bear piss, and makes you think you are just as invincible" work? ;)

Enjoying a bottle of that at home currently...it's almost happy hour!

Rather than pollute the vodka thread, I'll quote some posts in here...

My preferred martini is gin with a splash of vermouth. Since my wife likes them "shaken, not stirred", if we're both having one, I'll just make a double batch of vodka martinis in the shaker (olive juice in her glass), so I do drink those sometimes. Vodka tonics are probably my go-to vodka drink.

I was mildly curious about New Amsterdam gin since you could get a handle at Costco for about $20. Some reviews (albeit a few years ago) said New Amsterdam gin was "oily," which I cannot imagine being a very good quality for gin. I wonder if things are different now.

I think spending an extra $10 for Bombay Sapphire or Tanqueray is worth it for a weeknight G&T. That said, if New Amsterdam has improved, I wouldn't mind saving $10.

Honestly, I don't love the New Amsterdam gin. I just think it has citrusy elements that go well with tonic. As I recall it often gave me a headache too. I basically use Plymouth, and Bombay Sapphire if the store doesn't have Plymouth.

FLYMSY Mar 27, 2021 8:24 pm

My cocktail of choice is a gin & tonic using either Plymouth or Tanqueray. I find Sapphire is too “floral” for my taste.

I was just informed that today is National Gin & Tonic Day. Upon further research, it appears International Gin & Tonic Day is October 19.

But if we're being realistic, every day is gin & tonic day. :D

Cheers!

My birthday. Perhaps I shall try and have gin and tonics in multiple countries to celebrate and be truly international.
