Vending Machine Dinner?
And if you have made a meal from the vending machine, what did it consist of and what were the circumstances?
|
Yep, more than once. Usually happened when I've got to stay somewhere in the boonies where everything closes early (an no room service) and my flight got in very late.
What did I have? Typical vending machine junk food. Couple of candy bars/chips etc. I plan much better now, so it hasn't happened in a while, thankfully :) |
On my trips to SBA via LAX, I used to look forward to getting a Tuna Fish sammie out of the vending machine in the old annex at LAX. Yes, I was playing w/fire, but there was just SOMETHING about them.

Snowed into a Holiday Inn in Greenville SC 1983. Ate peanut butter crackers and coke for 3 days running until a restaurant opened. Had breakfast at Chinese place - possibly most welcome chinese meal in my life.
|
Just recently :( Chocoloate muffin, one of those heatable pocket sandwiches, ham and cheese I think, plus an ice tea.
I was stuck, hungry after a late flight and nothing open near me and couldn't wait the 30 minutes for a pizza delivery. |
What do they call those snack vending machines in Holland again? Grease and salt in one nice package. :D

FEBO! De lekkerste!
(I always smile when I see references in the AAntique AAircraft forum to this, makes me think of their F pax tucking into a greasy frikandel...) |
Reminds me of a quote from the great movie REPO MAN:
"Vended food contains all the necessary nutrients to sustain life." |
Beef Jerky, Cheese & Crackers, and fruit juice. It was loaded with sodium and preservatives, but in terms of macronutrient distribution it wasn't too bad.
I had this kind of meal fairly often in those late evenings when I was on campus and the eateries had already closed. |
When I was a kid, my mom's one "home cooked" meal was Chex mix -- from scratch!
Can you say WASP Cuisine? |
Japan and vending machines.
In Japan, I have chosen to have vending machines over what ever thing my aunt made for me. You can buy anything at a vending machine. Ramen noodles, hamburger, rice balls, french fries (this one needed some help). I was very satisfied many a time at these vending heavens. Must add: I was a teenager. My tastes are much more refined now. :D I only go to vending machines when my wife is not looking. |
At McCormick Convention Center about six years ago. My team and I were setting up registration for a tradeshow and working late.
There is a vending machine that has BBQ rib sandwiches and a little cafeteria microwave beside it. A lot lick those McRib sanwiches. Boy did we eat a lot of those vending machine fake rib sandwiches. Along with a bag of chips and soda all the nutrients to keep you running. |

Yum! Those vending machines should be everywhere. Mine consisted of Chex Mix, Snickers bar, and a diet lemonade. |

A beer and a slice of pizza.
|
When I passed through the Boise airport a few years ago, I saw they had baked potato vending machines. Those sounded promising, but I didn't try them.
A dinner of a vending machine cheeseburger well after midnight marked the low night of my grad school career. |
Vending machines in Japan for tea, beer, wine, noodles, ice cream and very good French fies!
Vending machine in Chicago after a late flight arrival. Hershey bar, chips and a Diet Coke. What class! |
Have had many a meal out of vending machines, especially when working graveyard shift and didn't pack a lunch.
Our company had a pretty good selection of choices. |
I've eaten tuna salad and egg salad sandwiches and chips out of vending machines at hospitals. It's sometimes better than hospital food.
I've also eaten many a pre-made sandwich from convenience stores while on the road. Steve. |
In my early days of consulting when I frequently stayed at the office until 2 or 3 am, I ate more vending stuff than I cared to.
As far as hotels, I ate ice cream for dinner once out of a vending machine at a Hampton Inn in Newark after arriving at 1 am from an uber-delayed flight (and subsequently delayed airport shuttle). |
I've bought hot pockets from the vendings for dinner!
|
Late at night at a JFK airport area holiday inn- my husband was asleep and we'd skipped dinner, and my stomach was growling! I got several packets of chips and pretzels, and I think a twix bar as well. Yuck.

A dinner of a vending machine cheeseburger well after midnight marked the low night of my grad school career. The oddest vending machines I've ever seen were the mineral water dispensers in Soviet Moscow. Thristy patrons had to select a used glass from the top of the machine, rinse it out, and then dispense a few kopeks' worth of water into it before drinking. Wierd! I think the Japanese have the market cornered on interesting vending machines. I heard about one that sold used underwear! |

My friend and I spent our last peseta on cheese sandwiches and beer from a Barcelona vending machine. Too bad we missed the last train out of town that night and there was no place to change money. That was a very long night in the rain - but we did have beer  |

One of the funnier things about Japanese vending machine culture is not necessarily the "banks" of them in major cities, but instead being in the middle of no where and seeing on the side of the road with nothing but a bench and trash can next to it. When I mean the middle of no where, I mean look around and all you see are paddies and maybe a house or two in the distance.

bag of cheetos and diet pepsi, so nutritious!
