Sack Lunch for the Flight?
With US airlines going to no food service or high-cost low quality box meals, how many of you are bringing your own food? And what do you bring?
As for myself, I have been known to hit the drive through window at the fast-food-du-jour; however when I'm flying out of LAX, BUR, or SBA, I'm more likely to hit a Trader Joe's market for a Bento Box, Rainbow rolls, Pear & Gorganzola Salad, or a Chinese Chicken Salad Wrap. They also have some very good trail mixes and tempting sweets. (...it's amazing what dark choclate covered blueberrys are worth for bribing seat mates and flight crews...) :D What are your favorite take along foods? |
I eat before I fly, or bring a sandwich. I hate the fact that airport food facilities are promoting things like fast food and pizza for eating on board. If the smell of your meal passes beyond the confines of your seat - eat it somewere else, please!

I once brought a whole roasted chicken on board a flight from CGD to ORD. Got the cab to stop at a good littel chacouterie on Isle St. Lous.
I merely wanted to eat quickly and go to sleep. The FA told me - kindly - that they had to move the whole meal service ahead by a couple of hours it made folks so hungry. But what tastes good that has no aroma? |

I guess it depends on where I am.
When I visit my sister in Taos, NM, I stop at the Trading Post Cafe in Ranchos de Taos and pick up a Chicken Salad to go. It's a generous sized portion of fresh (real) chicken salad, light cole slaw and dressed mixed salad greens. With or without toast. I ask them to put them into tight containers so they don't leak. And then I'm assured of a lovely lunch on-board to wherever I'm travelling from Albuquerque. If I'm driving to Abq the night before an early morning flight, I still get the luncheon from the TP, and put it on ice overnight. It's especially fun to pack a real fork, rather than eat with a plastic fork. Sort of makes you think of the old days in First Class when you actually were fed... and also fed with some style. And it also reminds me of the other old days when you could trade a nice lunch like this for an upgrade at the gate. Rita |

For the first time, in many years of flying, I'll be on a 3 and 1/2 hour flight at the end of the week without meals served. I've always enjoyed most airline meals--liking anything I don't have to prepare myself. Besides, eating the meals helps pass the time. On long hauls, the meals and the inseat entertainment helps keep my sanity! Also, I have hypoglycemia and must eat often. Well, I think we'll have to settle for energy bar and paperbacks this time. We really don't want to inflict the aroma of mac do on anyone.

depending on what part of the world I am travelling - A nice sandwich and chips from Au Bon Pon or Pret a Manger.

I almost always stop by a good local deli and get a sandwich to bring with me.
