Lexington, KY
By far the best Indian restaurant in Kentucky, and it may surprise you to know that there are several in both Lexington and Louisville, is between downtown Lexington and the University of Kentucky campus. On South Limestone Street.
Banana Leaf is its name and it is a fantastic family-run South Indian restaurant. http://www.bananaleaflex.com/ |
This thread is making me very sad.
After a few years in London (and quite a few drunken nights on Brick Lane), I'm now in Phoenix and haven't found any good Indian/Pakistani places here. Sigh.... I was in SF a few months ago and stumbled across a place behind the Clift Hotel. To be honest, I don't know if it was really good or just better than what I've tried recently. I suspect the latter. Again with the sigh.... |
Some awesome places in DC.
Polo India Club on Connecticut Ave in Dupont Circle in Washington, DC.
Awesome Naans, Tikka Masala, Vindaloo and all the rest. ^ Whenever I'm back, I tell my best friend Rob to round up the usual suspects and I go get my fix. Avoid the White Tiger on Capitol Hill. Do try the lunch buffet at Taj Mahal near the Eastern Market metro. |

When In Charlotte, NC
It's been awhile, but when I lived in CLT I found the food at India Palace II to be really good and rather authentic. It attracted the Indian expats in town. They had a location uptown as well but I never tried it.
Again not current info, but I also found the Taj Mahal Palace Restaurant in Tucson to be very good. I originally found them through the Entertainment Book but came back often for the good food and low prices and the .5 liter bottled beer. |

I ended up chatting to an Indian guy on a MIA-ORD flight last year. He recommended 2 Indian restaurants in Chicago when I asked him. Unfortunately I can only recall one, "India House". I haven't had chance to try it so perhaps the OP could sample it for us. ;)
However, their best location is in Buffalo Grove, IL. Never go to Oak Brook, IL; it is by far their worst. |

My other recommendation would be Rasoi in Pawtucket, RI. It's location is random, but the food and service are absolutely fantastic. If you sign up for their email club, they send out coupons for 20% off, free glasses of wine, etc..And, best of all, they are a member of the Rewards Network. They have a sister restaurant in Providence (Kebab and Curry, I believe), but I personally like Rasoi way better.
In Berkeley CA, there is the famous Vik's Chaat Corner as mentioned in this thread, but a more recent discovery of mine since moving back here is a place on College Ave near Ashby called House of Curries. Very simple, cheap, and darn good - exactly what I'd want to hear about if visiting. Sadly not part of the RewardsNetwork while a lot of other Indian places in the area are. |

I have found great difficulty in getting Indian food in the USA with a spiciness level that I grew up with in the UK.
In some places, telling the waiter that you're English is helpful in this respect, but in many cases increasing the spiciness level requested seems to just result in a very 1-dimensional increase in "heat", rather than the deep, balanced spiciness of a hot curry at a good Indian resteraunt in the UK. When we lived in the Seattle area, we found a couple of good places with a range of menu items to our tastes, but we haven't found anywhere in SoCal; the places that get good reviews are terribly bland, and the place I have been with Indian co-workers are, while suitably spicy, just a bit too authentic. I haven't tried Monsoon yet - it's a bit of a drive; maybe I should. The best Indian I have ever had is in London and Singapore. |

We have been recently to "Roti" in SFO. There is also one in Burlingame. The food was great, may be the best Indian food I ever had. Very spicy. Another good one is "Amber" in Mountain View. |

Rasika in DC - fabulous food although a little noisy.
KiwiPanda |
Breads of India in Northern CA. Locations in Berkeley, Walnut Creek and Oakland.

In New York, I've always like Dawat. Chola is also very good. They're on the same block.
In Boston, I like Tamarind Bay in Cambridge and Kebab Factory in Somerville. Neither is elegant like Dawat. Kebab Factory surprises. I don't usually have Indian food elsewhere except London, where it is a regular part of my diet. |

I loved several Indian places in the DC area. Indique in Cleveland Park and Bombay Curry in Alexandria were probably my two favorites...
