I stopped in at G&M a couple of months ago for lunch. They have rennovated their space, and I don't like it. The current space looks like a 1991 diner. The old space was so bad it was actually fun.

The crab cake was very good.

Has anybody tried the place inside security of the WN terminal at BWI?

thegeneral Mar 26, 2009 5:25 am

Where to go? A seafood restaurant I would think.

That is Obrycki's. Their original restaurant in Fell's Point is awesome for crabs. I never had a crab cake there though as we always just went for crabs. I'm going to guess that they are probably very good.

Not necesssarily as many Crab Houses in Maryland serve excellent crab cakes. We wouldn't refer to a Crab House as a seafood restaurant here.

slawecki Mar 26, 2009 2:47 pm

in the dc area, Blue Duck and Jerry's. these are not crab houses. op wanted crab cakes, not a crab house.

Yes, and you can get them at crab houses as well as at seafood restaurants as I was pointing out in response to thegeneral's post.

Another vote for Costco crab cakes

Nooooooooooo!

I found Angelina's several years ago when I was researching a place to stop for crab cakes on a road trip to DC. The group consensus was that they were superb, and I returned on every trip to Baltimore. This is very sad.

Philips, another Baltimore seafood house, sells frozen crab cakes which are available at Costco, but the crab content has become skimpier in the last couple of years.

My wife just made (okay let's say heated) some of these crab cakes from Costco. I won't say they are all crab but there were definitely some chunks the size of my index finger tip. Better than any other store bought crab cakes I have had in the past. In a pinch they are an easy cheap meal with a bottle of wine on a Friday night after work. Enjoy.

I refuse to eat Phillip's crab cakes. They are a disgrace to Maryland. The crab meat comes from Thailand.

How many Maryland Maryland crabcakes have you had lately?

I haven't eaten any crab cakes lately. :)

But I do know the last one I had wasn't made from canned pasteurized crab harvested on the other side of the world.

The last ones I had at G&M were. I haven't been able to find
Chesapeake crab at a restaurant in a long time.

Kagehitokiri Mar 30, 2009 4:14 pm

best in baltimore?

best ive had are jerry's. edged out best in annapolis, although i forget the name of that place.

best chain restaurants = great american restaurants in northern VA. coastal flats is best, because its 1 crabcake, instead of usual 2. but arties and carlyle have weekend brunch with great "crabcakes benedict."

anyone tried redrock canyon grill?

violist Mar 30, 2009 10:25 pm

I believe Venezuela, but certainly not Chesapeake.

That surprises me a great deal. I didn't think anyone but Phillip's was going out of the country for crab meat.

The only restaurants i am familiar with that serves MARYLAND crab cakes are the Black chain(black salt, etc). mccormic and schmick claim sea of cortez crab, and my beloved blue duck claim viet, la. i do not know if they mean la, or viet nam. every place else just serves delicious crab cakes with little or no filler.

When in NYC, try the crab cakes at BLT Prime. Phenomenal.

I have been to G&M and Obryckis. I prefer Obryckis. I thought their crabcakes were more flavorful. plus they have the deviled crab cakes which are outstanding!!

Roswell, GA Aspens Restaurant

I was surprised the first time I ever ate their crabcakes. They were wonderful, mostly crab. On a night I don't know what I want, I find myself driving there and having their wonderful bread, crabcakes, chopped salad, and a pinot grigio. Yum!

Back Fin Blue--Gulfport FLA

I have a home in the tiny little town of Gulfport Florida which is at the southern most tip of Pinellas County on Boca Ciega Bay. There you will find Back Fin Blue, a small restaurant with outdoor dining and the best crab cakes outside of Annapolis Maryland! No kidding, don't know how they do it but the crab cakes are jumbo lump, broiled to perfection and priced reasonably.

Crab cakes are one of the most fun foods in the U.S., because it is really, really hard to find a good one. In fact, I have never had a great crab cake outside Maryland. Even though I prefer Dungeness crab to Blue Crab in general, for some reason crab cakes (e.g., in California or the Pacific Northwest) made with Dungeness are not as good.

That said, my favorite are at Cantler's Riverside Inn outside Annapolis. This is a rare restaurant that is touristy yet excellent. (The atmosphere really makes for part of the attraction.) The broiled crab cakes are all crab -- no vegetables, spices, saw dust, etc. -- and just fall apart and melt in your mouth.

Last week I reconfirmed that my favorite crab cakes are served at the Houston's here in Atlanta.

The absolute best I ever had were Faidley's in Baltimore - prepared and served by the matron herself. Nothing I've had since compares. Minimal binding, just thick chunks of pure luscious and delicious crab meat.

I paid a return visit to G&M last night, and it was even better than my initial visit. The new decor is not bad at all - it has much less of a 1950s feel, uses lots of wood, and the space is broken up into several dining room/areas. I sat upstairs over the bar, which was fine for a solo diner as I had a perfect view of one of the jumbo flat-panel televisions on the walls (I was able to watch the ESPN special about the USFL - the sound is of course kept off, but the captions are set 'on').

The crab cakes were excellent - the same size as before, minimal filler and broiled just perfectly. I found that avoiding a potato/starch side in favor of slaw and mixed veggies as my sides made the meal more enjoyable (and it allowed me to demolish the double-crabcake platter)

I had a nice chat with the shuttle driver on the way back to the hotel, and we talked about some of the other places near the airport (Timbuktu, Snyder's and a place I hadn't heard of, Mo's). He stated that he preferred more flavoring in his crabcakes, specifically from the inclusion of mustard and Old Bay seasoning. But, in hindsight, I think I prefer the unadulterated flavor of the crabmeat that shines through at G&M.

I totally agree. I live in Alaska, and we have phenomenal king crab, but for some reason nobody can make a compelling crabcake out of it.

I'm from Maryland originally. I've never had a truly excellent crabcake anywhere else.
