What to eat in Montreal?
 

I hear this city has fantastic cuisine, question is, where?

I've been here a day and am simply amazed, what a wonderful place. (Whether you are religious or not, St. Joseph's Oratory will amaze) ^

Well, there's always the Globe for beautiful people watching and decent food at St Laurent...

However, the steak at Café Ferreira is the best...great restaurant too...Bice is nice...Toqué is something nice too...

All over! Montreal is a foody's dream town. French cuisine abounds, as does pretty much every other cuisine imaginable. The Main (St-Laurent) has a lot of trendy places, the Plateau has dozens of really good, reasonable choices, St-Denis Street can be a bit touristy, but there is plenty good along there. Old Montreal, the Village, every neighbourhood has fantastic restaurants. Don't forget to try the 'cretons'.

I think Toque is over-priced and over-rated. Instead, Milos in Parc, near St. Viateur, is awesome from what I hear from Montreal based foodies I know and trust.

I like the consistency of Les Halles in Crescent Street -- though if you go half a dozen times the consistency is also its worst enemy!!

Don't forget Bens and Schwartzes for smoked meat and poutine!!

I totally agree, go to Chez Cora for breakfast (but make sure you have a big appetite that morning.. their breakies are HUGE).. But very yumms and done very well. The atmosphere at Chez Cora's is always a busy and bright one. I also like the way they write thier menus, with little drawings to accompany the dishes --it's really cute. :p

Oh, you might want to gage for the right timing.. there's always a huge line-up that wraps around the building(s) eventhough their breakfast lasts from 6 am to 3 pm.

An absolute must for lunch is Schwartz's on St Laurent. Since moving away from Montreal 18 months ago I have them send a brisket by Fedex regularly. I am ordering 2 today for this weekend! :D

Most of my favorite places to eat in Montreal are hole in the wall type places, you really can't go wrong with anything in Montreal. There is Greek 'joint' on the corner of Renee Levesque and St Denis called Deno's that makes fantastic Souvalaki. I lived about 3 blocks from there in Old Montreal and was a regular.

For something a bit more fancy, Le Piemontais (1145-A de Bullion, 861-8122) is a must. It is an Italian restaurant with a strong French influence. It is about 1 block from Renee Levesque and St Laurent, on Renee Levesque. Amazing food.

I second Schwartz's. Great smoked meat sandwiches. If the lines too long then cross the street and go to the Main.

I was at Schwartz's last night! So great, love the hole in the wall type of place, reminds me of a lot of the tenedor's in BA. So great, I ordered the "perfect meal" (I believe it was a sandwich "medium", fries, pickle, cherry cola?) I don't remember exactly, the waiter was so enthusiastic I couldn't say no. It was fantastic, I couldn't get over the line winding around the place, but I must say the 30 min. wait was worth it.

I'm heading off to Chez Cora right now, I'm gonna miss Montreal...

and as soon as I go home I'm heading straight for the gym...

..is L'Academie on the corner of St. Denis and Deluth...and for good basic Italian... Eduardos just across the street. if you BYO you can get out of either place for $CND 50 for 2.

I also echo the recommendations to eat at Schwartz's Deli (3895 boulevard St-Laurent; Tel: 514-842-4813). What I do everytime I'm there is order more of their spices (Poultry and Beef). They're wonderful in the BBQ and certain recipes.

Another place I enjoy is Chez L’Épicier, a Vieux Montreal restaurant with a chef who takes a creative approach to his cuisine. My favorite dish is a dessert called the "club sandwich". It's a sandwich made of jelly and chocolate layered between slices of cake, with spears of fried pineapple in place of the fries! Mmm.

You didn't mention what mood or style you want.

For a deli I'll second (or third) Schwartz's and Bens.

For an upscale steak place try Moishe's.

For ribs there used to be Biddles on Aylmer between JFK and Sherbrooke, last time I was there it had changed to Hall of Jazz. Still had good baby backs and live jazz in a tiny venue.

I may get killed for these two but a touristy burger place on Ste. Catherine's is 'Mr. Steer', and for a college hangout with cheap beer and munchies try Peel's Pub also on Ste. Catherine's/Peel.
