Any suggestions for restaurants?

Geez... I am envious... it's been 20 years since I have been to this little piece of paradise, set apart from the rat race.

I'm sure you will get some good responses here, but do check out the Lonely Planet book on NZ for here -- I remember finding some fine local places via it.

Be sure to try hokey pokey ice cream (a NZ delicacy).

Ciaobella is about the best food in Christchurch and despite the name it is NZ food rather than Italian. Excellent lamb that is not to be missed, though the seafood is also quite good.

We had a couple of very nice meals in the dining room of the George Hotel, where we stayed. We enjoyed wonderful strolls through the nearby botanical gardens to work up our appetites.

Might be a bit touristy, but the Vic & Whale was pretty nice & the Honeypot has some exotic natural cuisine.
