No harm done... I just saw that you were in Europe, so I figured you didn't know how to access US Yellow Pages, so I linked you for that and future searches.

Sounds like an excellent place... too bad I'm on the wrong coast ;)

And you have to love that the waiters at Wonton Garden all wear Hawaiian shirts!

Personally, I'm a fan of Big Wong's across the street when I need my roast pork wonton noodle soup fix. My experiences here with stuff that comes out of the back kitchen here haven't been so good, but if you stick to roast meats, wonton/noodle soup, and congee, it's all good.

(And yes, there is a certain snickering teenage boy appeal to the name... Another fave in the neighborhood, Yummy Noodles, made t-shirts for the staff that said I Heart Yummy. Strangely Big Wong's never got on that bandwagon. I would have been first on line to buy one, though. )

Oh well, my coast is mostly even farther! Put it in your book.

Cheers.

:D Well, canīt keep up with that name - but the chinatownicecreamfactory.com around the corner sells nice yellow tīs with a big friendly dragon in the front.

Another recommendation right around the corner from Wonton Garden on Bayard Street is the Mei Lai Wah coffee shop (pretty much across the street from the Ice Cream Factory). If you haven't been here, it's quite the experience.... It's a hole in the wall, and the average age of the staff seems to be 65+, but they have really great pork buns and other baked goods. There is also a menu of noodle soups and other things that I haven't tried yet.

On the weekends, the place is packed with Filipino ladies each trying to buy 3 dozen pork buns, they run out of everything, the staff is surly.... but I love it! :D I recommend going on a weekday, and sitting down and having a cup of tea and a bun or two. It can be a total scrum waiting for takeout, and this way you can sit and enjoy the show.

Pork buns (steamed or baked) are 60 cents each, coconut buns are 50 cents, and special steamed buns (which have ground pork, roast pork, sausage, chicken, egg, and shiitake mushroom all in one bun--yum) are all of $1.30 or so. Your final bill is calculated by the number and color of the empty plates in front of you.

And you can check Wonton Garden menu on menupages.

I find this website a great tool to check out NY restaurants' menus before actually paying them a visit.

I second the Mei Lai Wah recommendation.

If you're ever in the area, try the dan san (I'm not sure what they're called in English.) Dan san are crunchy fried dough drenched in honey/corn syrup.

Good to know what they're called! I've always thought of them as "those fried bowtie looking thingies".

Yeah, Big Wong's is also good for their roast pork over rice and shrimp omelette over rice.

However the best cheap, greasy food in Chinatown is the pork chop over rice at the numerous Vietnamese restaurants (there's one on Centre Street below Canal, one near the corner of Mott and Bowery, and then there is one north of Canal on Mott).

I actually like the Joe's Dumplings on Mott Street. Good Authentic Shanghai food. - Siu Lun Bao.

Other than that I don't normally recommend people eat in Chinatown

Won Ton Garden

So I am in NYC and decided to give them a try - very cheap - I think I spent more on the taxi and while the food was tasty, the meat in the pork buns was a little too minced and I thought the bowl of won tons and noodles with roast pork could have been super-sized... :p but overall - very good value and a really full menu...
