Slappy Joe-What is it?
 

I am hearing of Slappy Joes, it seems it is something to eat. Can anyone tell me what it is? Thank you.

You mean Sloppy Joes?

Ground beef (or chicken or turkey) mixed with tomato-based sauces, various spices, sometimes onions and peppers, served on a bun. Sloppy because they are typically served to children in school lunches and can be a messy lunch.

They are definitely not a staple of American cuisine. Dunno if I have ever seen one on any restaurant menu.

Slappy White Begat Slappy Joe?
 

The great Slappy White was a Black American comedian who died in 1995. He used to travel the "Chitlins Circuit" with Redd Foxx. Slappy may have had a son that he named "Slappy Joe!"

A famous quote attributed to Slappy White is, "The trouble with unemployment is that the minute you wake up in the morning, you're on the job." :p

A Sloppy Joe is a form of a Bun Taco. If there are any of you with Del Taco Restaurants in your area, you can order it, and it may or may not be on the menu, but they will make it...usually less than $2.75.

Another option is, if you go to your local grocery store....look for Lawry's Sloppy Joe Seasoning next to where the salad dressing, gravy and other mixes are. Directions are on the package to make this at home.

Although a good one does not taste remotely like a taco. More of a bbq flavor, although not quite, made with tomato sauce and or ketchup, perhaps a pinch of oregano, diced sweet green peppers, brown sugar. And ya gotta have chips to scoop up all the mess that falls out of the bun. If you're smart you'll eat it with a fork. Add a Diet Coke and you're set! :)

You can buy canned Sloppy Joe sauce at most supermarkets in the United States. Just mix the contents of the can with a pound of browned ground beef and put it on a soft hamburger bun.

Isn't the modern brand for Sloppy Joe's the "Manwich" as seen on T.V

Hey Sloppy Joe's are good. If you like Taco's or Spaghetti Sauce, you'll like Sloppy Joes.
Usually with the store bought ingrediants you brown a pound of ground beef them mix in the sauce and let is simmer a few minutes.

Although a sloppy joe tastes nothing like a Taco or Spaghetti sauce I do believe they would be considered cousins :D

This is the Sloppy Joe I grew up with which seemed to be a Northern New Jersey deli delicacy. We used to send out for them all of the time. Sort of like in the style of the Dagwood sandwich.

Town Hall Deli in South Orange, NJ was known for their sloppy joes. We never knew it was a ground meat sandwich. It was always the best sandwich (fit for 2-3 people) that the deli made.

Here are other delis which made them but Town Hall was the best.

Now I wonder where did the "Joe" part come from?

It definitely is...though I think the Manwich sauce is not as good as making Sloppy Joes from scratch. I'm sure there are a bunch of recipes on the Internet if you did a search.
