Rome Restaurant Advice Needed

Any recommendations for great Rome restaurants that won't break the bank would be appreciated! We will be staying in the Pantheon area.

Not really a restaurant, but there is a good gelato shop right next to the Pantheon. When looking at the front of the Pantheon, look to your left, and a few steps down the street that leaves that square is the gelato shop..

Osteria La Carbonara, Piazza Campo de Fiori.

Dal Bolognese, Piazza del Popolo.

Every place around Piazza Navona. Right around the corner from where you're staying.

There are restaurants all around the Piazza Navona, some less good than others. Check out the menus that are posted and see if it feels like a place you would enjoy....there is a mixture of restsaurants with different atmosphere. We enjoyed I Quattro Fiumi, great staff, very friendly, good food at reasonable prices. Of course, sitting there in the afternoon, with the beauty of the fountains splashing is a wonderful experience wherever you eat.

I thought since the area around Piazza Navona is touristy, everything there would be overpriced. Is that not the case? I am actually going to be staying near Piazza Navona and thinking about going to less touristy places for genuine Italian meals at locals prices. Any recommendations?

Why is that?

Trastevere is great - it's more of the authentic modern roman experience.

One place I go to a lot of Monte Carlo in Trastevere, very reasonable prices for the good food and drink.

Although located in the Jewish Ghetto, for my $$ Piperno is the best. It is moderately priced and off the beaten track so not very touristy. Worth a cab ride........you'll need reservations.

Giolitti for gelato

I think Berto is referring to Giolitti on via Degli Uffici del Viccario north of the Pantheon. It has a green sign on the building. I also recommend having a coffee at Sant' Eustachio which is near the Pantheon.

A truly Roman restaurant is Piccola Cuccagna is located at 14 via della Cuccagna - Piazza Navona. Massimo is the owner, and his mother supervises the kitchen.

Just got back from Rome. Orso 80 is indeed great--do remember to order the antipasti and that the antipasti is HUGE--lots of plates.
Another restarant that we liked a lot is just off Plaza Rotunda--the Pantheon Plaza. It is called Armando al Pantheon. Great quality. Ask for suggestions--they give good ones.
Tazza del Oro for coffee. San Crispini ( near Trevi fountain ) for Gelato.
The Scavi Tour under St. Peters is amazing--you have to pre reserve and it's not easy, but really worth it!

Dal Bolognese is one of my favorites as well - just a wonderful place.

Another you might try is Giarrosta Fiorentina. Excellent food and atmosphere in a fun part of town.

Recommendations from Americans Living in Rome...

Here's a link to the web site of a church that my family and I visit when we are in Rome... http://www.santasusanna.org/index.html

Interestingly, they have some decent information about restaurants and recommendations that you can drill down to from "Visitor Information" on the Home Page... I have eaten at a number of the restaurants recommended and am particularly fond of the GIRARROSTO TOSCANO at Via Campania 29 near the Villa Borghese and the ALLA RAMPA at Piazza Mignanelli 18 near the Spanish Steps...
