Australian Restaurants
 

As an Aussie, I'm a bit miffed at the total lack of Australian posts on this board. Australia has some of the best food and restaurants in the world. We Certainly have the best wine.

So to those of you who have been to Australia, or are Australian, please post your favourites here.

Outback Steakhouse does not constitute Australian cuisine

My favoutie place for a steak would be the Norman Hotel in Brisbane, best overall restaurant Joseph Alexanders , again in Brisbane, and the best wine either Lindemans or stock from the Ballandean Estate in South-West Queensland.

Of course, the best beer in the world is either XXXX or Hahn Premium

So now I throw it open to the masses who are either in the country or have been at one stage. Where do you dine, and on what?

Our favorite was 2 Fish Seafood Restaurant in Port Douglas located at 7/20 Wharf Street. We went back both nights of our stay because we liked it so much the first time! The fish was well prepared!

I was amazed by the quality of the food served in Chinese, Japanese and Vietnamese restaurants in Melbourne. I can't remember the names of the restaurants I dined in but they were actually in the suburbs (think Springvale, Knox City, Footscray, Ringwood) All were absolutely stunning, serving fresh and tasty cuisine. As for prices, from the no-frills eateries to the more expensive fine-dining, they represent EXCELLENT value for money when compared to back home. Being a Brit I am ashamed to say that the quality of similar food found in the U.K falls well below that in Australia. I was in dining heaven down under! ^ ^ ^ to Australia!

I've only been to Sydney, so my experience is quite limited. I enjoyed Tetsuya's, although I had heard so much hype about it before I went, I was a little disappointed. Had I gone in with lower expectations, I'm sure I would have loved it.

I really liked Becasse (Surry Hills) for their understated elegance and very well-prepared food, and Bistro Lulu (Paddington) for the great value prix fixe offered for the early dinner seating (very handy for jet-lagged travelers).

And a classic Sydney breakfast spot, Bill's (Darlinghurst), has good eats and great atmosphere.

My partner and I ate at Cumquats in Brisbane a couple months ago. Native cuisine served in a contemporary style. Pretty nice, original, and not too pricey!

The BNE Rydges Hotel Southbank served one of the best fish frys we've every had.

In Melbourne, I've enjoyed making my way through the David Jones food court at lunchtime. :D

They do a mean seafood buffet too.

I would have to say that the best Sydney restaurant (definately the best views) is Cafe Sydney, which is a little known gem on top of customs house overlooking circular quay, the opera house, bridge and luna park. In Melbourne, well it is the cultural capital of Australia so you are spoilt with choice, Le Restaurant if your budget is unlimited, La Maison which is out in essendon but the best french/internation food, Fenix in Kew, Stokehouse upstairs in St Kilda...I could go on and on (some say I do already :p )

While what you are saying is generally true, lets not forget that the UK has some of the best Indian food around and Chinese food in London is comparable to those in Australia.

I would love the names of a couple of good restaurants in Melbourne if anyone has them handy.
