Montreal-two great new places!
Went to two great newish restos on my trip to La Belle Province last weekend.
First was Le Club du Chasse et Peche. This is simply the finest restaurant in Montreal right now IMO-blows Toque out of the water. Lovely warm setting and very impressive food at a fair price. The chef used to be at Cube and is really shining in his own place away from the St.Laurent "scene". The second was a small place on St.Andre called Bruniose.Food of the season, prepared with great attention, and served with style. It is also a real bargain as the entire menu is prix fixe.Three of us ate with a very modest wine for $162 cad!And the portions are of good size. Also revisited Au Petite Extra again this trip, what a good place that is. And I did a St.Laurent stroll, starting at Rachel for Poutine at pitita patata, then to a pourtugaise grilled chicken joint, then Schwartz's,,,yummmmm! |
I'll be in Montreal in May - do you have a web address or other info on how I can make reservations?
Also, if you happen to know if it is close to any of the Starwood hotels (I'll be staying at 3 or 4) |

Taxis are not expensive in Montreal. |
I'll be making the drive up to Montreal in April (along w/ Quebec City). Thanks for the recommendations. Any other restaurants you can recommend in either of these cities?

Ate at Le Club Chasse et Peche in Feb. and had a fantastic meal. We were there late, early in the week. Reserved by email (in French, though I assume you can also write in English) with no problem. Very attentive staff--a fine experience. Keep in mind that it is a little hidden away and you need to detail the location (cross street etc.) for your taxi driver and there is no sign out front so have the address # as it is the only sign you are in the right place.

I went to college in Montreal so my mainstay was the $1 pizza and falafel restaurants on St. Denis St..still can't believe how much food you could get for $2 in those days (mid 90s).
But I do have 3 recommendations: One night when my roomates's parents came to visit and took us to Troika a fine Russian restaurant on Crescent St. It was great and made a lasting impression on me. I go back to it every time I am in the city. And as everyone and their mother in Montreal will tell you - Moishe's for steaks and Swartzs for one kick a** sandwich. Also try Poutine - a Quebec invention of fries, gravy, and cheese and optionally bacon. Sounds nasty but tastes so good and probably has 2000 calories per serving. |
