Help With Restaurant Name in Zurich
Hi All,
A few years ago, I atea t a very enjoyable restaurant in Zurich. As I will be returning there for a night in a month or so, I figured I would see if anyone can help me with the name. It is a "beer hall" type restaurant with rows of long tables inside a traditional looking building. The dining area was very large with high ceilings and I seem to recall a military theme in the decor (including a large piece of artillery). In many ways it reminded me of Munich's Haufbrauhuas, minus the umpah band. Location wise, it was not far from the main shopping street (Bahnhofstrasse?), when facing toward the train station, to the left and up hill. The food was very good -- I would say traditional Swiss/German fare. I had veal ina cream sauce over roisti potatoes, which was delicious. Any thoughts? Thanks! |
Here you go,,,,
I think this is what you were looking for - just off Paraderplatz on the Bahnhofstrasse... extracted review courtesy of Zagat!
Zeughauskeller Bahnhofstr. 28a Zurich 41-1 -211-2690 “Fun” “for visitors”, this “pleasant and informal” “beer hall” “in a medieval building” (a “15th-century armory”) “in the midst of the Old Town” (District 1) is “always crowded” with “many locals” and “big parties” of “American tourists”, all of whom “share tables” and feast on “simple” fare that “couldn’t be more typically Swiss”; a true trencherman’s treat, it offers “large portions” of “a wide variety of sausages”, including the “one-meter-long Kanonenputzer (cannon cleaner) – a must.” |
One traditional Zurich gem with Chagall and Picasso on the walls and all time Swiss favorites on the white linen covered tables would be the Kronenhalle on the other side of the river. There is a separate bar, the "Kronenhalle Bar" with world class barkeepers mixing some serious aperetifs and digestivs, and a bar menu including some favorites from the adjoining restaurant. Prices are quite steep, though...

I'll second Kronenhalle. Great place and the signature Stroganoff is fabulous, but a bit pricy.

Thanks everyone. That name defiantely rings a bell, so I think that was the restaurant of which I was thinking. The alternative reccomendation looks interesting too. Now I've got options.
Thanks! |
