Buffets with a difference

Timely bump.

Last week we had a buffet face-off.
  1. Really good salad plus cooked-to-order steaks onboard a great cruise liner
  2. Buffet at a local resort (small selection of cook-to-order)

Between the two, just a small room-service order.

Each was a non-buffet ambience, each enjoyed with plenty of time and no crowds.

A highly unusual buffet situation each time. :)

[PS. I was reminded by the other buffet thread started today ;)]

Heard this before on XM. I love it. The "somewhere over the rainbow" part had me rolling.

The comic makes standard stereotypical jokes about Chinese, Japanese, and Indian cuisines. I'm not insulted, but I didn't find the jokes that funny or well crafted.

They were playing his "water park" bit on Blue Collar radio as I was running errands this morning. He makes fun of himself which allows me to discount somewhat the offensive content of his ethnic humor. If you're at all sensitive, don't listen to redneck, uh I mean blue collar comedy.

The Grand Hotel in Stockholm. I went in 2003, and remember the trip as if was yesterday. Abosultely incredible food and location. But, I think you'd have to be a fish fan with the quantity of varieties of salmon and herring preparations that they served. It was made all the better having it as my first real meal after backpacking and living off of 4 cookies and all the water I could drink per day for 5 weeks.

I've tried the Leela in BOM for both dinner and breakfast, and it isn't too bad. I suppose the best part is that it is the only place in India that I've found that serves beef.

My favorite when I'm being naughty? Cici's. It's foul and basic, but the overload of butter and canned apple filling on the dessert pizza is addictive.

I remember traveling w/a salesman who distributes our product in Texas about 10-12 years ago. Flew into Tyler to meet him. Dude seemed reasonably normal... apart from the 'concoction' we would have to pull off the side of the road for him to access from the trunk every once in a while. Guy was pure Texas. I will say that it wasn't alcohol (at least I dont think). He was into some sort of herbal/natural healing and this was one of his 'mixtures' he drank every once in a while. He was immediatley open about a colostomy he had. It was all just real weird. Every 30 mins or so, he'd be checking the price of gold on his phone. Again, just all very weird.

SO, he says, "I've got a great place to grab some lunch. Excellent buffet!".
We pull into a Golden Corral, bwhaaaaa. Dude was in heaven. He hammered that buffet while I kinda laughed inside. Don't recall if it was a fruitful trip for me, but I had some good memories.

My favorite buffet was one my parents used to ake us to in Lancaster, PA- Miller's Smorgasborg. It was probably pretty 'Golden Corralish', but my siblings and I, all of 8 yrs old or so, loved the hell out of that place. It was such a treat for us.

Many years ago (and famous for many years, but now but a memory) the weekly Seafood Buffet at the Admiral Nimitz Officers' Club. Treasure Island, San Francisco was quite a feed....(but then Navy officers were easy to please, frequenting such down-scale venues as the Flight Suit bar, O Club, NAS Oceana - near Norfolk - where the Atlantic Fleet's aviators demonstrated a variety of non-flying skills, or the weekly "Sing-a-long" at nearby Fort Story's Officer's Club, cheap beer, loud singing and local girls)

The weekend brunch at the old Arlington Hotel in Hot Springs, AR, was lavish, especially during racing season.

Ritz Carlton Sunday Brunch in Singapore. Something like $100 USD, iirc. Had huge oysters in numerous varieties, cooked fresh lobster, shrimp, prime rib, etc etc. I was super impressed, plus they poured Veuve freely. Not bad, since the liquor we consumed would have easily cost that in Singapore anyway.

Also the Thursday night seafood buffet at the asian restaurant in the Leela Palace Bangalore. More like $60, but lobster cooked to order and more. Amazing.

This was all a while ago but no buffets have ever compared.

Two weeks ago, Friday night seafood buffet at the Four Seasons Westlake Village, CA. $59/per person. Fresh cooked to order lobster tails, fish, shrimp, crab legs, etc.

Possibly best buffet I've ever been to.
