Currys in London
 

Any recommendations for a good curry in London? Am not necessarily looking for anywhere too chichi à la Tamarind or Chutney Mary just tasty, filling curry. Thanks.

Dunno don't know London but this applies to any city in the UK: Find an area with a large South Asian ethnic population and take a walk; you'll see plenty of places to get a good tasty curry. It helps to do this on a busy evening as this will give you some not so subtle hints at which places serve the tastiest curries (the best places will be very busy).

You may want to check out Brick Lane for a large selection of curries - take the Tube to Aldgate East or Bethnal Green

If you don't want to go over to Brick Lane try Khans or the Standard in Westbourne Grove, both have around for 25+ years and are considered amongst the best in London by curry aficionados and restaurant guides. They are both always packed so dont expect a table without a wait, neither is expensive (at least by London standards). Tube to Queensway or Bayswater.

I found a great day (and balance to the retail giants) is a few hours at old Spitalfields market and then lunch at almost any of the places on Brick Lane.

Green St (Upton Park tube) is my favorite, esp. for South Indian. Also, for Sunday brunch buffets, there's a street near Euston station that has some good deals (perfect before a Eurostar departure).

I'll second Brick Lane. There's some fantastic places up there, and I love the atmosphere of the area. The Vibe and Big Chill bars are great fun, too.

An alternative is to head down to Tooting, where you've got the option of canteen-style places on the High St, or further South, a couple of Keralan ones (the Radha Krishna Bhavan is a particular favourite).

Kingsbury and Kenton
 

Number of excellent places here. RAM is a vegetarian place ( Nearest Tube Kenton) with excellent and reasonably priced Surti ( Gujerati) cuisine . Lahoria has excellent meat curries and Rose is another vegetarian joint on Kingsbury Road ( Nearest tube Kingsbury)

Surbition curry
 

The Red Rose, in Surbiton, near Kingston Upon Thames, is exceptional. Or, at least it was 5 years ago when we lived there!

My husband always goes to either the Standard or the Aladdin on Brick Lane when he is in town.

I find Brick Lane a bit over-run, and as a consequence standards have slipped . Tooting is an excellent area to head for, so are Southall and Wembey.

If you want somewhere central, try Chowki on Denham Street just behind Piccadilly Circus. Some interesting regional dishes at very friendly prices. To try some very authentic South India vegetarian cooking, Woodland's on Marylebone Lane is a favourite.

I have to agree with above posters on Brick Lane recs. When I"m in town and having dinner with my local pals, they know I'm wanting curry and we've never gone anywhere but Brick Lane.
