I was just wondering if anyone had tried dinner at Tin Lung Heen in Hong Kong (at the Ritz on the Kowloon side) I am thinking of dinner there when I am in town, and just wondered if anyone had any experiences to share?

I'm late on reading the news that Michelin is coming to Bangkok. Any predictions for stars?

I thought that the food and service were superb. The "western style" of e.g. bringing out dishes one at a time was a bit irritating and came across as pretentious. We didn't manage to snag a windowside table, but still had amazing views. Overall, really enjoyed it, and for lunch, it was decent value. tb |

Le Petit Nice, Marseille - 3 stars
We had Lunch at Le Petit Nice. The hotel/ restaurant is beautiful located with direct seaview.
https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4176/3...408ef929_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4162/3...259b48b3_b.jpg The restaurant is bright, but not really fancy. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4189/3...524d409f_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4165/3...8d7fd57a_b.jpg In fact it shows some wear and tear and is in need of a renovation. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4172/3...6e6cb9c6_b.jpg Therefor the view from our table was great, even if it was such sunny that I had to eat with my sunglasses. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4177/3...25c3e2c0_b.jpg So so non-alcoholic cocktail: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4176/3...72c1898a_b.jpg We took the Lunch-menu which is priced with 100,00 € per person. That was what we got: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4188/3...38821272_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4158/3...2e7154bd_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4173/3...95ebc622_b.jpg Nice start https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4177/3...68135a17_b.jpg Good bread with seaweed. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4193/3...eb5077ec_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4176/3...72677272_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4176/3...709c3ff4_b.jpg The oyster was very strong in taste, carpaccio was fine. My company didn´t like both and couldn´t even eat the oyster. Sad, but I doubled my experience.... https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4187/3...e2dd4f8e_b.jpg A fresh tatar with an interesting smoked flavour – I liked it, my company not. So I ate 2.... https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4177/3...3d3d39f3_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4166/3...03d013cb_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4185/3...ae1d8ac6_b.jpg This dish was one of the best tuna I ever had with a very nice and fresh sauce. Nevertheless it could have get some more attention in detail regarding presentation as you can see. As my company don´t really like raw fish I had 1 and a half. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4194/3...0c276746_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4180/3...902c7583_b.jpg A solid dish. Desert https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4182/3...ceffef91_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4162/3...cb177551_b.jpg Over all a good one with fresh flavours, but not the greatest one of my life. Funny was that it came with a beef jus on the side. I told them we don´t eat meat at the beginning. So they brought my company one without it, but obvious they couldn´t imagine that a male really don´t eat meat. Post-desert https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4156/3...0a07b5e0_b.jpg Interesting in a positive way! Wasn´t fishy by the way.... Petit fours https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2846/3...f9f6177c_b.jpg I liked the food, it was a enjoyable experience. Nevertheless I´m not sure if I would rate this place with 3 stars, it´s nearer on 2 stars in my eyes. The view on the sea is great, the restaurant itself could get some renovation. Service was attentive and professional. My company didn´t eat very much, as many dishes were raw and she found the kitchen too experimental. |
Sushi Taro in DC for my birthday yesterday; had the kaiseki menu. It was quite nice, and deserving 1 star IMHO... but I actually like Kaz Sushi Bistro's sushi better (it's more creative and edgy; the Sushi Taro fare was super-fresh and with a great variety of fish, and was very well-done, but it was in the end "just" fish & rice). Worth the price and very good, anyway.

Alexandre, Nimes **
The restaurant of chef Michel Kayser holds 2 Michelin-stars and I found the menu interesting.
When we arrived and the gate opened I found one of the most special ways I ever took to a restaurant: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4189/3...cc3f97dd_b.jpg After I parked the car we were greeted friendly and escorted to our table. The restaurant is furnished very nicely and on our table was a beautiful floral-decoration. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4161/3...09fd0617_b.jpg We were the first guests, but it filled up quickly. Soon I had to learn that at the table next to us sat at least one moron. He was speaking to his cell-phone for a while, not the best manners. After we got some cocktails (fruit-juices) they brought us this nice selection: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4184/3...6514d424_b.jpg As my company wasn´t too hungry we took the menu Nature Sublimée. The bigger menu must be shared by the whole table. Price for our menu was 82,00 € per person which is fair. First we got bread and well-presented olive-oil: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4190/3...e8bb923f_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4182/3...6566f561_b.jpg Very good Amuse Bouche: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4183/3...1b9b557a_b.jpg First course was “Floating island with truffles from Provence on Cevennes'boletus soup” https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4176/3...06c178cc_b.jpg This was a great and memorable dish! I would eat it again every minute, as the taste was so good. I can´t praise it enough! More bread.... https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4181/3...9343aa57_b.jpg The main-course was “« Tielle » from Sète, Lobster, squid and prawn tartlet, Marinière sauce with Muscat from Château l’Ermitage https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4185/3...38550146_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4179/3...2248ca42_b.jpg Also a good dish! For desert I had “Confit "Frecinette" banana in a kalamansi juice, Tonka seeds meringue, Coconut sorbet and foam”. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4157/3...fa5819f7_b.jpg Creative, very good – what else could you expect? My company had “Chocolate lovers paradise cake“. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4184/3...411e5222_b.jpg As she already had enough I got another half desert..... It was great, even if I liked my desert even more, but this is personal taste. Petit fours: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4170/3...93fc0b08_b.jpg I really enjoyed our meal, it was great food. At the way out Michel Kayser asked how we liked our meal and had a little chat. The 2-star rating is absolutely justified, I can only recommend the restaurant. |
Wish I was there :)

Le Vivier - L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue *
When we arrived at the restaurant the 3 parking spaces or so were already occupied and we started a search. After a while and unsuccessful attempts I decided to park at a motel, not sure if it was allowed. I got the impression it´s connected with the restaurant, which lies in an unattractive functional building with shops.
When we entered the restaurant we were positively surprised. The whole restaurant is furnished with Kartell furniture and accessories, a brand my company loves. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4192/3...f68ce33c_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4163/3...77853cc9_b.jpg You can like it or not, she would have liked to take everything. I found it stylish. The meal started with an Amuse Bouche. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4172/3...27ebecfe_b.jpg When I saw it, I was surprised. I had told them that we don´t eat meat, but it was ham on it. I removed it, so not the biggest problem. The Mozzarella-foam tasted OK. I would call it solid. For the first course I ordered Fresh morels, asparagus, pink schrimps and lapsang souchon sabayon. It sounded great and they charged 10,00 € surcharge. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4193/3...447bd31b_b.jpg When I tried it I was shocked. First I found something like bacon-pieces in my food. The roasted cheese or whatever it was tasted of pork fat. The morels and asparagus were OK. Even if I waive the meat-problem not a good dish. My company ordered Open ravioli of haddock and mussels, apple and celeriac. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4176/3...abd20335_b.jpg My company thought it tasted strange. I tried and had rubbery pure white fat in my mouth. Even the rest tasted terrible and if I now look on the picture, the dish barely meets the requirements of an appealing meal. Our main-course was roast scallop, watercress, ginger and cauliflower, https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4175/3...f03141d9_b.jpg OK, no meat this time, but the dish was underwhelming. Worst thing was the sauce which simply didn´t match and had an unpleasant taste. The other components were also underwhelming. To be fair the scallops were good prepared. Not good! As desert my company had the selection of chocolate dessert. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4158/3...7f840fac_b.jpg It was tasty and good, I would say on the level of a good restaurant. I had the apple, pistachio and matcha-tea combination. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4159/3...650e10b5_b.jpg Not bad at all and solid. Last: Petit fours: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4184/3...ee55998d_b.jpg What a meal! Who gave this restaurant a star? It was without joking one of the worst meals I ever had in a starred restaurant, nothing was even near the expected level. This restaurant should be avoid at all costs, to add the icing on the cake we were both ill after our visit and I get still sick when I remember. |

House of Tides, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, United Kingdom
Our lunch experiences, May 2017 A week before our holiday in Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK my fiancé found out there was a 1 Michelin starred restaurant located there by the river Tyne. We decided to try our luck and booked a table for two in such a relatively short time frame. We could even choose our preferred time online. Lunch at the House of Tides is only available on Fridays and Saturdays. We went on a Friday in May 2017. We liked the Vegetarian Tasting Menu, because it fit our needs best and sounded on the one side grounded, but also a bit adventurous and was another all vegetarian experience after having had lunch and dinner at the Zirbelstube, which holds 1 Michelin star, in Stuttgart, Germany, which was very Avant-garde and exciting by Chef Sebastian Prüßmann who left this restaurant recently for personal reasons. The House of Tides is located in a 16th century building near the Tyne river and below the High Level Bridge. The chef patron is Kenny Atkinson. When we arrived we could spy a bit into the kitchen. It was similar to our experience at Sant Pau in Tokyo, where the structure is postmodern and diners can't look into the kitchen, but pedestrians can. When entering the restaurant we were warmly greeted and our jackets were taken. The bar on the ground floor was cosy. We were asked if we wanted to go up to the dining room on the first floor or preferred to have a drink at the bar. We decided to go ahead with lunch, so we were brought immediately upstairs. The restaurant had kept the original beams and other features. We liked the feel of the dining room. House of Tides was nearly booked out. Our fellow diners were mostly older and British, but there were some Asian and younger guests too which added to the atmosphere IMHO. Service was impeccable, warm and welcoming. Having provided our dietary requirements before, they just double checked who couldn't eat what. We decided to have the complete vegetarian tasting menu excluding the cheese course. Our still water was sourced from the area [Northumberland] and was called Marlish and suited our meal. Our signature House of Tides cocktails were Rum Re-Fashioned (rum, brown sugar and ginger bread syrup) and Tropical Tides, made with Durham Vodka, which comes from nearby, plus Passoa, Passionfruit and Mango. Both cocktails were very delicious and the Tropical Tides specifically brought back memories of sunny and warm holidays. The meal started with Ewes Curd, Linseed, Apple; Carrot, Fennel, Meringue; Onion, Cream Cheese, Truffle and Feta, Gooseberry, Mustard. There was cheese on a thin disc, a cone filled with ewes curd and linseeds, a macaroon and a lightly fried cheese with micro greens. All of it was treated as finger food. It was delicious and the different textures and flavors were to our taste and we would have no problems to have it all over again. Next was a more traditional dish of Fermented Rye Bread and Cultured Butter. Both were excellent. One of our favorite dishes was the Parmesan Royal, Quail Egg. It was a pastry filled with poached quail egg and a fluid Parmesan sauce. It was quite large and a bit messy to eat, but had great taste and was fun. This was followed by more traditional courses of Asparagus, Jersey Royal Potatoes, Morels (The mushrooms in his dish were replaced by Tenderstem Broccoli.) and Ragstone [goat cheese] Gnocchi, Spring Vegetables. Both made us think of the season. They were beautiful to look at and tasty. The gnocchi were among the finest we enjoyed so far during our culinary experiences. The Gariguette Strawberries and Curry Leaves came in an artistic globe and was a palate cleanser. The crowning glory was Dark Chocolate, Hazelnut, Gold Leaf - a fantastic light signature cake. The design of the gold leaf on the cake matched the plate perfectly. My fiancé enjoyed a glass of Royal Tokaj Blue Label 2009 with the desserts which he found wonderful and moreish. The crockery was equally sourced from Newcastle upon Tyne and surroundings, which we actually liked a lot. To round up our meal we decided to have green tea and treats, which were caramel chocolates. They were like the Parmesan Royal, large and better eaten in one go. Otherwise the fluid caramel center would spill. We spent 2.5 hours at House of Tides and were rather sorry to leave after paying our bill of ca. 164 GBP (ca. 191.20 Euro / ca. 212.20 USD) including 12.5 % Service Charge. We would return again, because we liked the atmosphere, the architecture, friendliness of the young and good looking staff and the memorable dishes. We believe the lunch menu is indeed good value at 55 GBP (ca. 64.10 Euro / ca. 71.20 USD) plus Service Charge, considering the superb ingredients used. Here are some of our images we took during our lunch at House of Tides, Newcastle upon Tyne, England, UK, May 2017: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4179/3...2a60624b_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4193/3...f8604735_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4195/3...bcaebf9e_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4244/3...7b1c901b_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4252/3...e8a2832f_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4167/3...48177c9f_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4268/3...d123767c_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4226/3...f88afa0b_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4243/3...28fb1b2d_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4201/3...d0353dca_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4175/3...9fa6901d_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4223/3...b864ff2d_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4161/3...45558c4b_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4165/3...76953882_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4175/3...37fe524f_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4186/3...4993de26_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4196/3...073acb85_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4193/3...e52d9fde_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4162/3...f731b9ac_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4226/3...33813816_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4223/3...957b8c7e_b.jpg Would we recommend this restaurant to a friend? Jean-Georges NYC Lunch
I apologize for the bad pictures. I was just looking them over and they look horrible!
Anyway, I had lunch this weekend at Jean-Georges and it was as great as I remember. I arrived a few minutes early for my already early reservation, 11:45 IIRC. That was the only time that worked in my schedule. But I was warmly greeted and told it would be just a minute. Sure enough, In about 2 minutes I was taken to my seat. Really my only gripe about the meal was my table. I've sat at the table before and it is really awkward. Here's a pic (taken from their website and with my added circle!) http://i.imgur.com/xTRusez.png?1 I felt like I was sitting at the table with the people behind me. I heard every single thing they said. But to the main event: http://i.imgur.com/Cw4qaqq.jpg?1 This is the amuse of salmon soaked in beet and asparagus with some sauce (forgot what). There was also a little herb soup. http://i.imgur.com/DxilUpB.jpg?1 Course one was pea soup with parmesan foam and olive oil croutons. http://i.imgur.com/MkVClSE.jpg?1 #2 was black pepper crab dumplings http://i.imgur.com/r6M9Zrk.jpg?1 Third was sweetbreads with a sweet chili emulsion http://i.imgur.com/06RDJUA.jpg?1 Lastly were some mignardises of marshmallow, chocolates, and a sweet fruit candy. The overall meal was fantastic, each course was very good and the service was nice as well. It did start off a little removed, but my table captain opened up towards the end of the meal. And it is still a fantastic deal IMO. my total bill was $100 (exactly, I was proud of myself) after tea and a house made soda. |
I think I once had the table on the left of yours. Much better....
Glad JG still delivers...... |

Fanny Rey - Saint Remy de Provence *
Fanny Rey participated in a French TV-show. Pastry chef is Jonathan Wahid.
The restaurant is modern furnished. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4198/3...e6985074_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4268/3...d19ea9e4_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4275/3...021b56bd_b.jpg The menu - especially the Wellness & Balance menu is incredible value. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4243/3...b5bdcfc2_b.jpg Amuse Bouche https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4243/3...583ff5e1_b.jpg Good! Langoustines https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4250/3...1f61445b_b.jpg I had 2.... Also very fresh with good textures. Flowers https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4220/3...c87a84eb_b.jpg Beautiful dish in all ways! The highlight of the menu. Red mullet https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4271/3...a3aec9cf_b.jpg Without doubt good, but not as good as the other dishes. Cheese: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4202/3...ff1d9f42_b.jpg Strawberry cocktail https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4196/3...693f000b_b.jpg Nice Chocolaterie https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4228/3...e16dfc7c_b.jpg Very good desert! Petit Fours: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4271/3...0234b2cc_b.jpg I enjoyed our meal, Fanny Rey has definitively potential. I guess we will hear some things from this restaurant in the future. Only thing I was angry about, that I din´t eat twice and did instead the long drive to terrible Le Vivier. |
Any experiences with Jules Verne Paris recently?

Restaurant Gordon Ramsay ***
Took me long enough to discover this thread...
I had a hard enough time booking a table, since 10 weeks out (!) there was one solitary table that wasn't a 2:30pm lunch or 8:30pm dinner for the last week of April. I ended up booking that last table for a noon lunch on a Thursday. The restaurant itself is barely marked, with a small plaque next to the door. There looked to only be street parking nearby, but I had walked over from the tube station so I'm not entirely sure. Once inside they offered to take my coat and offered me a drink and a plate of macadamia nuts while I waited for the rest of party. The interior of the restaurant itself is generally dimly lit with the sheer blinds covering the windows (which I prefer, but makes pictures less fun). http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...8/IMG_1081.jpg Once seated I opted for à la carte menu, which is also currently listed on the restaurant's website. A chilled pea and cheese amuse bouche, which was excellent http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...Render%205.jpg Pressed foie gras, green apples, turnips, watercress, smoked duck, which was my favorite course of the meal. http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...Render%204.jpg Braised, confit, and roasted Herdwick lamb, spring vegetable 'navarin', which I though had its ups and downs. While the chops were fantastic, I found the other cuts of lamb to be a bit tough and overcooked. http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...Render%203.jpg The main was followed by a bit of an odd pineapple and coconut palate cleanser, which resulted in little bits of coconut getting stuck in my teeth everywhere. http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...491efeb045.jpg Caramel milk chocolate, malt mousse, treacle granola, praline, hazlenut milk, which was a great end to the meal. It wasn't overly sweet, which is more to my liking http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...SizeRender.jpg Petite fours http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/q...8/IMG_1080.jpg We were also invited to a brief kitchen tour after lunch. It was surprisingly quiet, with very few words being spoken in the kitchen. Overall I would have to say the food was very good, but the main was a little disappointing, especially since the Maître D' mentioned that it was a signature dish that had been popular for a long time. The service wasn't overbearing, which was greatly appreciated (because no one wants to stop their conversation and say Thank You ever 15 seconds) and the restaurant staff knew the food very well. That being said I was much more impressed in food and service by Lung King Heen (***, HKG), even though it was for dinner instead of their dim sum lunch service. |

Joel Robouchon, Mote Carlo **
Next restaurant: Joel Robouchon, 2 star restaurant at Metropole hotel Monte Carlo.
Valet parking was quick and doormen very friendly. Metropole is old fashioned but opulent. We found fast the way to the restaurant which was nearly full. The furniture is like the hotel not the newest fashion but nevertheless elegant. We were showed our table and placed our order. As we decided before we opted for the vegetarian menu which is priced reasonable with 99,00 €. I like at the Joel Robouchon restaurants, that they mostly offer a good vegetarian option. The menu: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4197/3...b8330b3a_b.jpg We got 2 non-alcoholic cocktails: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4224/3...b6ea17ea_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4275/3...76949dde_b.jpg Definitively above average! Amuse Bouche: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4204/3...cdd8b84f_b.jpg The whole evening was “big cinema”. While the restaurants in Provence focused mainly on food the restaurants in Monaco offered also a show. One of the elements were the bread-wagon. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4249/3...8edb577c_b.jpg The selection was indeed formidable. They came every few minutes and offered replenishments. What we got were in fact outstanding bread: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4226/3...fbb70429_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4219/3...3d018fc2_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4198/3...ecbb55dc_b.jpg The first course, which I liked. Also a very good dish: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4198/3...0af5264f_b.jpg Now the main course! It was a huge serving but I found it too spicy and the rice too hard. Not a positive memorable dish. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4222/3...b99366b2_b.jpg The desert was small, but I liked it. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4272/3...a90cbc0c_b.jpg They had (open the curtain) a desert wagon. It wasn´t part of our menu so we only ate with our eyes: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4273/3...873ac029_b.jpg Part of the menu was coffee or tea. Like the bread tea was celebrated. They have a tea wagon with several plants to do fresh tea: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4276/3...8d3e9906_b.jpg The tea was good and in general a good idea. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4204/3...9bab36e9_b.jpg Petit fours: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4272/3...30816e27_b.jpg The kitchen wasn´t perfect during our visit but with exemption of the main course on a very high level. Service was attentive and without failure. I can recommend Joel Robouchon Monte Carlo and would visit again. Value was very good in my eyes. P.S. At the end "madame" got a present. It was this cake: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4204/3...2f7840a4_b.jpg |

We were also invited to a brief kitchen tour after lunch.
My wife's relatives took us to Imperial Treasure (2-star Michelin) in Shanghai a couple weeks back. First time I have eaten at a 2-star spot in jeans and a t-shirt for sure... :D That said, the food was excellent all around.

I need some advice...
I'm taking my sister to NYC for her (and my) birthday, I would like to take her to a Michelin starred restaurant but cannot decide which. She ruled out Jean-Georges and me Per Se, but I have been leaning towards Le Bernardin or Gramercy Tavern but can't decide. She's never been to any Michelin restaurants and don't know if we should dive right into 3* or do it more slowly? She'll eat almost anything so cuisine isn't much of a factor. So I guess my question is, what would you do? |

Do you have a Twitter feed for all of your pics? Was looking at Andy Hayler's pics from the Typing Room last night. Seems like a good idea.

Mirazur Menton **
Mirazur is actual number 4 at San Pellegrino list and best restaurant in France. Michelin is not that enthusiastic and “only” gives it 2 stars. Gault Millau is even more restrained, they give it 17,5 points.
The restaurant is located in Menton only a few metres from the Italian border. In fact we parked in Italy. From outside it´s rather spectacular, in fact you wouldn´t expect that in this building is a good restaurant. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4214/3...e1ffe888_b.jpg From inside it´s a round room, some tables share a sea view (ours did not) https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4264/3...ab193b9f_b.jpg The menu offered 4 options, we opted for the lunch-menu. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4249/3...d8e4fe94_b.jpg They started with some nibbles https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4287/3...fd256ef8_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4209/3...9e6f33c9_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4288/3...4fb2e4da_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4246/3...6d693fa9_b.jpg Creative and good. We also got a whole bread with a bread-poem and home-flavoured olive oil..... https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4281/3...b9d3e2c5_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4208/3...2375d1ec_b.jpg Now the first course: Crumbled crab and gamberoni from San Remo, Hibiscus-Turnip https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4223/3...590fe731_b.jpg Guess who ate 2...... It tasted well, but wasn´t an explosion. Would call it solid. Next came “Green” – Peas from our garden, kiwi and fennel https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4233/3...534b6610_b.jpg A fresh dish which was very good. The main: Saint Pierre from Mediterranean – green curry and celery from our garden https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4216/3...72677419_b.jpg Without question faultless cooked and a good dish, but not a wow-one As I had the mood for it today I ordered the cheese trolley. https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4287/3...bf0b0818_b.jpg I asked for a selection thru the trolley and got this: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4248/3...516a631c_b.jpg Good cheese without many garnishes – puristic I would say, but not really in a negative way. Time for desert: Naranjo en Flor – Sospel´s St Joseph saffron, almond foam and orange sorbet https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4199/3...e16784bb_b.jpg Tasted good, but it will not make the way to my hall of fame of deserts. Petit fours: https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4271/3...ae86edea_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4218/3...c0fcb6dc_b.jpg https://c1.staticflickr.com/5/4204/3...1c2c87fa_b.jpg Good ones! OK, now the verdict! Number 4 in the world and best in France?n Surely not! I can name many restaurants which are better. It again shows the value of Pellegrino list. Is 17,5 point fair? Perhaps, but I´m sceptical with Gault Millau. I think 2 stars at Guide Michelin are fair. It´s without doubt a really good restaurant, but not totally great. Considering the price tag it was a good experince and I would recommend it. But it´s not like I must return at all costs. Perhaps San Pellegrino can be a curse in some cases.... |

April 2016, Our lunch experiences
During my fiancé’s birthday travel in April 2016 we decided to have lunch at VAU. It has one Michelin star and is just off the Gendarmenmarkt, where the Franzoesiche Dom and Deutscher Dom are located, on Jaegerstrasse in the heart of Berlin, Germany. It is in a quiet area and VAU has as a direct neighbor the Greek Embassy. The classic building has a vibrant color and a Mediterranean feel. https://c8.staticflickr.com/9/8809/2...0a54bf5b_c.jpg|| VAU || 1* MICHELIN STAR || 16 GAULT MILLAU POINTS || CHEF: KOLJA KLEEBERG || OUR MEMORABLE 3-COURSE LUNCH IN THE HEART OF BERLIN || GERMANY || HIGHLY RECOMMENDED || OUR DUB-AMS-[RTM]-AMS-HAM-[TXL]-DUB-TOUR-APRIL 2016 || by UggBoy UggGirl, on Flickr The interior was designed by Meinhard von Gerkan. He was also responsible for Le Canard Nouveau in Hamburg, where we had lunch only a few days earlier. Please see our review. There are some things both restaurants have in common: The chairs and the use of wood. Otherwise Le Canard Nouveau is understated and Japanese/Asian, while VAU is inspired by the sunnier climates of Southern Europe. VAU is divided into two spaces. One at the back, which contains the most of the tables, and another, bright space where ca. 10 people can sit. The window is very large, and reminds us more of a show window of a shop which lets in lots of natural daylight. Another reason was the personality of the chef Kolja Kleeberg. He is very creative - not only in the kitchen. He is a musician and actor as well. The first thing, when entering, we encountered was the bar, which looked stylish and right out of the 1930s. We were warmly welcomed and brought to our table near the window. There was an elderly couple already enjoying their lunch. Later a group and a single business man arrived. The atmosphere was good and the staff made us immediately feel welcome and at home. The table was covered with a white linen cloth and had a flower in a vase as decoration. We were offered Seltzer water, which was included in the price of the lunch, and asked if we would like to have an aperitif. We checked if they had alcohol-free cocktails. The bartender came to us and asked if we wanted a classic or modern one. We decided for the latter. It was made with Matcha green tea, lime, grape juice and soda and was served in a Martini glass. We both loved it. The combination was just right, not too sweet and not too dry. Next bread and salted butter were brought to our table which we enjoyed, a good start. We chose from the lunch menu and decided on three courses. Our starters were roasted cod, onion tarte fine, rocket salad and anchovies and asparagus ceviche, elderberry, pomelo and watercress. It was followed by crisp pike perch, spinach, brown butter, almonds and pink grapefruit and pink fried duck breast with wild broccoli and radicchio trevisano. Desserts were Piedmont hazelnut cake with cream praline and sea buck thorn and Tarte Tartine with rum raisins and walnut. My fiancé wanted to try the other non-alcoholic drink with orange juice and Sun-bitters. It came in a long ball glass and was decorated with skewered orange pieces. The "classic" was equally memorable as was the "modern" non-alcoholic cocktail we enjoyed earlier. https://c2.staticflickr.com/9/8668/2...024cf231_c.jpg|| VAU || 1* MICHELIN STAR || 16 GAULT MILLAU POINTS || CHEF: KOLJA KLEEBERG || OUR MEMORABLE 3-COURSE LUNCH IN THE HEART OF BERLIN || GERMANY || HIGHLY RECOMMENDED || OUR DUB-AMS-[RTM]-AMS-HAM-[TXL]-DUB-TOUR-APRIL 2016 || by UggBoy UggGirl, on Flickr With the choice of our coffee, Cappuccino, which was also included in the meal, we received Canele, the same pastry as we had at the FG Restaurant in Rotterdam, The Netherlands earlier during our travels. Please see also our review for more. The menu was well prepared, the flavors balanced and fitting to the ambience of the restaurant. The invoice came in at 115 Euro / ca. 130 USD. The service was attentive, warm and very well aware of our allergies and dislikes. The lunch was delicious, of high standards and beautifully presented, beside this we enjoyed the location and service, plus the overall setting of the Restaurant VAU. When in Berlin, we would eat here lunch or dinner again in our future. Would we recommend this restaurant to a friend? That said, there is no denying that some of the best seafood you will ever eat is at Le Bernardin. I think the deciding factor should really be how much you are in touch with your pescatarian side. Lastly - the aged / cellared beer selection at GT is phenomenal. I never fail to get an aged beer (last one was ~20 years old!), and they are excellent. No other restaurant I have been to in the world (3-star Michelin or otherwise) has as thoughtful a selection of aged brews. |

This is fair, but I think the atmosphere does contribute something. GT is prototypically NYC, whereas Le Bernardin is a bit sterile and generically cosmopolitan in atmosphere.

In the news...from Chicago...
Two Michelin-Starred 42 Grams Closes After 3 1⁄2 Years Stunning news broke over the weekend as 42 Grams, one of Chicago’s 26 Michelin-starred restaurants, announced its immediate closure. This ends a three-and-a-half-year run in Uptown for chef Jake Bickelhaupt and his ex-wife, GM Alexa Welsh. They made the announcement on Twitter but have since deleted the restaurant’s account. 42 Grams debuted with two Michelin stars after being open for only 10 months, and Michelin inspectors have awarded the restaurant the same rating for all three years 42 Grams has appeared on the guide. It’s somewhat of a rarity for a BYO and tasting-menu restaurant earns such acclaim so quickly. and... UPDATE: Welsh posted a note on the restaurant’s website confirming the shutter. Refunds for those holding reservations will be issued. While Welsh didn’t share the exact reasons behind the closure, she did write that it wasn’t because of financial reasons. https://chicago.eater.com/2017/6/5/1...byo-restaurant Cheers & Safe Travels. ^ |
