What are some restaurants/eats from your childhood that are no longer around?

I have two.

Anthony's in Deerfield, IL. Served a great beef sandwich w/anthony's sauce (whatever that was!) This was the first "restaurant" that my buddies and I would ride our bikes to. Owner moved a sub shop he had elsewhere into this location, Anthony's no longer http://www.flyertalk.com/dining/ftdi...orum/frown.gif

The second is the Peacock ice cream parlor on Old Skokie Road in Skokie,IL. Used to be just north of Old Orchard shopping center.
My pop used to treat me there, granite counters, server dressed up in all white w/the hat on, chocolate sodas YUM. gone now

O'Callagan's---They had a chocolate milkshake* that was to die for. There was nothing better on a sweltering Mississippi summer night.

Villa Sweden Smorgasbord(?) in Huntington Beach, CA.

I used to fill my plate as big as I wanted with salad and thin blue cheese dressing, big red Jello squares, mashed potatoes with brown gravy and swedish meatballs - HEAVEN.

The swedish owner would come by and visit each table of regulars, including us, with her blond updo. I remember her being a nice lady.

When we got there, my dad would always give some name like "Brown," differing it each time for my sister's and my amusement. After dinner he gave us the money and let us go to the front to pay the check.

Burger Chef!

Agreed, Burger Chef was great...especially the ones that let you dress your own burger.

One of my family's Christmas traditions involved everyone dressing up and going to a matinee performance of The Nutcracker at Lincoln Center. After the ballet, we'd all dine at The Duck Joint. How I miss it.

From young adulthood, not childhood, but here goes:

Goldies Trail Barbeque overlooked the Mississippi River at Vicksburg. It was nothing to look at but the food was great, with a view of the River to match. It was tonr down to build a "nice place."

Not a restaurant, but I periodically lament the loss of Pepperdige Farms Nassau cookies. These were just the right blend of cookie and chocolate, and it wasn't that bitter chocolate that makes the rest of the Distinctive Cookie Collection so unpalatable. (I know its heresey, but I'm not a huge fan of chocolate in general)

In NYC...

*Schraffts. It was find seeing a fine cornicopia of People from all over the world enjoying ice cream.

IN Atlantic City: THe old Taylor Ham Stand near Virginia Avenue, next to the Planter's Peanuts store (where you can smell the peanuts baking.) Was a fussy eater growing up so all I ate in AC was Taylor Ham, breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Taylor HAM FYI is a form of Pork Roll served around the Mid-Atlantic area. Some Jersey diners still have it.

Was that the one about 4 blocks up from PCH on Main? Geez, we used to always have grade school or related functions there.

The Museum of the City of New York is running an exhibit on this till March.

Fifth Ave and 102nd street.

It's a great museum.

Oh, I miss Peacock's terribly! I grew up about two miles away, and we spent many Saturday evenings there. Their sundaes used to come in the nice big pint cups with lids on them - I was partial to burgandy cherry sauce in the summer and hot fudge in the winter.
