Charged for an ice cube.
This is a first for me. I ordered a Manhattan on the rocks made with Woodford Reserve. My father in law ordered one straight up with Maker’s Mark. Basic charge: $9. Upcharge: $2 for Makers, $3.50 for Woodford. Separate charge: $1 for Rocks.

Photo of ice cube? Was it a crafty ice cube? They’re cute. I also am stunned by the charge. It’s like having to pay to drive someone to the Departures terminal at dfw like when we drive to any airport to drop off pax with luggage before returning the car to the rental car agency. Just unexpected.

Those are pretty cheap prices for a cocktail. Too bad they had to tick off customers with that petty ice charge. |

What? I hope you told them that you consider that $1 is a tip....the only tip. That's just wrong.

It’s gonna get interesting when that happens. Is it $1 a cube? As far as prices, I’d day they’re in the ballpark for around here, maybe a little on the high side. I ordered a “summer old fashioned” off the specials menu there last week. It featured Makers Mark and a house made honey apricot syrup. It was pretty good, but I thought $14 was on the pricy side. With simple syrup, that’s an $11 drink. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.fly...dcf3a77d85.jpg |
Only an upcharge with an oversized cube. With your status, you receive two complimentary cubes.

I was with a group. I would not raise a stink unless I was alone. I was left wondering if this is the newest revenue stream now that credit card surcharges seem to be on over half the bar and restaurant tabs I receive. But no one else yet? I'd ask for it neat and regular ice on the side if you want to avoid that. |
I figured they had the same ice cube tray that gaobest has.
|
We had a place here that charged for rocks - and it was just regular ice. Place didn’t last long after that

Jeez, I wish I had thought of that. What's next...charging for air?
And $20 for a gallon of raw milk? I'd love to hear the hype on that. LOL. When’s the last time your low tire pressure light came on in the car? I think I had to pay $1.75 for 3 minutes of air at a gas station last year. Sadly, we have free air in my community, but it’s for golf carts and my car is too wide to fit the path. |
Why is air at gas stations no longer free?
. . . Inflation Carry on ;) |

I wouldn't be surprised if other states have similar legislation. |

Corky lives in California. California law mandates that compressed air and water be available free of charge to customers who purchase fuel.
I wouldn't be surprised if other states have similar legislation. Can they yank the hose out of your hands if you don’t buy something? What about EV’s? Are there free air pumps at charging stations? Is the water potable? Who answers that toll free number? Do you suppose they enjoy their work? |

For what it is worth, I have never, ever been charged for fancy ice cubes, but then, except for happy hour, I can't remember the last time that I saw a mixed drink or a cocktail listed on a menu for less than $10. Edited to add: The results of a quick Google search show that Connecticut and New York have similar laws. |

And I got mine at Pep Boys, who will do the same. But it’s a long drive with that yellow light staring me in the face. The $1.75 pump at the Mobil station is much closer. They probably also have expensive giant ice cubes too.
And I actually have a 6 cube 2" mold and 2 big round sphere molds. Somehow it isn't that hard to fill them with water. I still can't get over those Erewhon ice cubes for $32. |
QT gas stations around ATL have free air.... when the machine actually works.

However, I have had MANY instances out on the road where I couldn't find air, especially in California. At any rate, this has nothing to do with dining or ice cubes. :D |
To bring this back on topic, I like ice and I dislike paying $1. Y’all know where the like button is ;-)

If I didn't find out until the bill, I'd also tell the manager or bartender that I'm never returning. I realize no one cares if I come back or not but hopefully they hear it from enough people to reconsider. The last thing we need is for this to be the next stupid trend. |

I frequently drive 5-6 hours, I'll travel with a large size cup of ice, as it melts I'll drink the water.
There have been times where I've needed more ice so will stop into the store at the gas station when refilling. I'll fill up my personal cup with ice from the soda machine. On more than one occaision, but thankfully not often, the store will attempt to charge me for the ice in my personal cup even though I'm buying a bottle of ice tea or other beverage. (I never try to simply refill my cup with ice without any purchase) When I go to return the bottle beverage back to the cooler, the clerk inevitably says, don't worry about the ice charge. Gee Thanks. |
