Charged for an ice cube.

This is a first for me. I ordered a Manhattan on the rocks made with Woodford Reserve. My father in law ordered one straight up with Maker’s Mark. Basic charge: $9. Upcharge: $2 for Makers, $3.50 for Woodford. Separate charge: $1 for Rocks.

gaobest Apr 28, 2024 9:06 am

Photo of ice cube? Was it a crafty ice cube? They’re cute. I also am stunned by the charge. It’s like having to pay to drive someone to the Departures terminal at dfw like when we drive to any airport to drop off pax with luggage before returning the car to the rental car agency. Just unexpected.

What? I hope you told them that you consider that $1 is a tip....the only tip. That's just wrong.
Those are pretty cheap prices for a cocktail. Too bad they had to tick off customers with that petty ice charge.

I did not take a picture, but it was a single large cube. At another bar I frequent, it is referred to as a “gentlemen’s cube”.

I was with a group. I would not raise a stink unless I was alone. I was left wondering if this is the newest revenue stream now that credit card surcharges seem to be on over half the bar and restaurant tabs I receive. But no one else yet?

When my father in law orders a martini, he asks for a glass of ice on the side. It’s gonna get interesting when that happens. Is it $1 a cube?

As far as prices, I’d day they’re in the ballpark for around here, maybe a little on the high side. I ordered a “summer old fashioned” off the specials menu there last week. It featured Makers Mark and a house made honey apricot syrup. It was pretty good, but I thought $14 was on the pricy side. With simple syrup, that’s an $11 drink.

Only an upcharge with an oversized cube. With your status, you receive two complimentary cubes.

I have never seen a Manhattan or Old Fashioned priced in the single digits! And a glass of wine is only $7? The food prices seem about right though. I wouldn't make a stink either if I was with others. And they should never charge for rocks regardless of the size of the ice. I have a friend who quizzes the server about the ice when she orders an Old Fashioned...they should never be served with crushed or small ice.
I see the name is the Crooked Spoon....crooked is right.

From a bar I frequent, I'm told they order those and pay for them like anything else. It's not like they are making crystal clear 1.5in x 1.5in cubes of ice in their icemaker. That said its kinda strange to upcharge for it, and even $1.

I'd ask for it neat and regular ice on the side if you want to avoid that.

BamaVol Apr 28, 2024 2:27 pm

I figured they had the same ice cube tray that gaobest has.

wrp96 Apr 28, 2024 2:34 pm

We had a place here that charged for rocks - and it was just regular ice. Place didn’t last long after that

Maybe it’s our west coast / Vegas lifestyle. Chicago also charges more.

mine are ice balls. I also have big cubes. Zeppan’s in Portland sells big ball craft ice that’s $10-15 for 6 cubes. My photo is from 2022 so prices might vary. That’s MORE than a dollar apiece. Again - west coast living.

Erewhon sells bags of eight ice balls for $32.

Jeez, I wish I had thought of that. What's next...charging for air?
And $20 for a gallon of raw milk? I'd love to hear the hype on that.

LOL. When’s the last time your low tire pressure light came on in the car? I think I had to pay $1.75 for 3 minutes of air at a gas station last year. Sadly, we have free air in my community, but it’s for golf carts and my car is too wide to fit the path.

cblaisd May 1, 2024 11:15 am

Why is air at gas stations no longer free?
.

.
Inflation

Carry on ;)

Corky lives in California. California law mandates that compressed air and water be available free of charge to customers who purchase fuel.

I wouldn't be surprised if other states have similar legislation.

Not anywhere in the southeast. Seems like an odd law.

Can they yank the hose out of your hands if you don’t buy something? What about EV’s? Are there free air pumps at charging stations? Is the water potable? Who answers that toll free number? Do you suppose they enjoy their work?

They give you a token or a code to activate the air compressor; I have always been provided with either the token or the code when I asked for it, whether I purchased gas or not; complaints, when appropriate, may be filed using an online form. The water is fit for topping off your radiator; drink it at your own peril. In the few times that I have charged my EV since I got it a few weeks ago, the chargers were located in supermarket or shopping mall parking lots, not at "service stations," so they had no air pumps.

For what it is worth, I have never, ever been charged for fancy ice cubes, but then, except for happy hour, I can't remember the last time that I saw a mixed drink or a cocktail listed on a menu for less than $10.

Edited to add: The results of a quick Google search show that Connecticut and New York have similar laws.

I buy my tires at Americas Tire ...get air checked & put in my tires for free.

And I got mine at Pep Boys, who will do the same. But it’s a long drive with that yellow light staring me in the face. The $1.75 pump at the Mobil station is much closer. They probably also have expensive giant ice cubes too.

yeah but I bed you have to put the air in yourself. That's not going to happen with me.
And I actually have a 6 cube 2" mold and 2 big round sphere molds. Somehow it isn't that hard to fill them with water. I still can't get over those Erewhon ice cubes for $32.

QT gas stations around ATL have free air.... when the machine actually works.

I have an air compressor in my garage which I use for a multitude of different things including adding air to tires. :)

However, I have had MANY instances out on the road where I couldn't find air, especially in California.

At any rate, this has nothing to do with dining or ice cubes. :D

ElevatorEnthusiast May 2, 2024 12:49 am

To bring this back on topic, I like ice and I dislike paying $1. Y’all know where the like button is ;-)

The place we are eating at tomorrow night has large cubes. And they’re free. They also have Jamesons on tap.

You should get a portable compressor, they plug into the charger port in your car. Mine's always in the trunk!

If I knew I'd be charged for an ice cube, I'd walk out. If I didn't find out until the bill, I'd also tell the manager or bartender that I'm never returning. I realize no one cares if I come back or not but hopefully they hear it from enough people to reconsider. The last thing we need is for this to be the next stupid trend.

Mashed potato, peas and carrots, pot roast and gravy on the side. Mrs BV’s favorite comfort food.

I frequently drive 5-6 hours, I'll travel with a large size cup of ice, as it melts I'll drink the water.

There have been times where I've needed more ice so will stop into the store at the gas station when refilling. I'll fill up my personal cup with ice from the soda machine.
On more than one occaision, but thankfully not often, the store will attempt to charge me for the ice in my personal cup even though I'm buying a bottle of ice tea or other beverage. (I never try to simply refill my cup with ice without any purchase)

When I go to return the bottle beverage back to the cooler, the clerk inevitably says, don't worry about the ice charge. Gee Thanks.
