Vegemite/Marmite and other yeast spreads

I had never tried either and brought back a jar of Vegemite from Australia when I was there last week. I finally got around to trying it - I put a little Vegemite on buttered toast. It was actually pretty good! I now wish I'd brought more back...though I suppose I can probably find it here if I look hard enough.

Add a slice of cheese to that Vegemite toast. ;)

It is readily available. Why? No idea. But you shouldn't have a hard time finding it in Chicagoland. Why? Because some people have no taste, and no taste is the only way I can get that stuff down. :p

I can't believe I still haven't tried it. Going to move it up on the "to do" list. I have an odd feeling I may actually like it.

With cheese is good....but try it on toast...with an egg on top... (Yum) Always spread it thinly!

It's really just spreadable umami. It's amazing on a cheese toastie or with smashed avo. If you spread it on like Nutella then you're not going to have a nice time. Plenty of people also use it in gravy and stocks.

I saw this at the supermarket the other day...

I really like English Marmite.
Couldn’t believe how much I hated New Zealand Marmite when I was given some to try.

Even if you don’t like yeast extracts, any of them are really good as taste enhancers when cooking soups, stews or sauces. Loads of vitamins, minerals and amino acids, just add a spoon or so instead of (or in addition to some) salt and it’s a really versatile hidden ingredient that brings nutrition and umami to most dishes - even Japanese spaghetti napolitan.

The UK Marmite always seemed noticeably sweeter than Vegemite. I only ever ate Marmite when I lived in the UK, but I stick to Vegemite here. I've never tried NZ Marmite, I didn't even know that was a thing. Although I seem to remember something about a shortage of Marmite in NZ after the Christchurch earthquake. I just assumed they made the UK branded stuff over there.

Apparently there’s a contract Marmite in England has with beer brewers around the country. A lorry turns up and the brewers fill it up with the sludge surplus from their beer making process. Lorry goes back to the marmite factory and then some highly skilled blending work goes on to standardise the taste.

Shocked me how different the result of this process could be from one country to another. I don’t mind vegemite, but NZ Marmite was an egregious assault.

Apparently, NZ Marmite has sugar added to it among other things.

UK Marmite

Yeast Extract Salt Vegetable Extract Vitamin: Niacin Spices Vitamins: B1, B2, Folic Acid, B12

NZ

Yeast Sugar Salt Wheatgerm Extract Mineral Salt (508) Color (Caramel) Herbs Spices Vitamins: Niacin, Thiamin, Riboflavin

And reading around the internet the Kiwis don't like UK Marmite or Vegemite because it's too tangy.

In Australia there is also Promite that is sweeter and much milder than Vegemite. I never really liked it. I'm guessing the NZ Marmite is along similar lines.
