This is common at least in the Midwest. Many in my family did it, I never saw the appeal.
One of the bad parts of travel is when you return somewhere with your mouth watering only to discover the place is gone. We had a favorite place in Munich close to the zoo, they had the best wild mushroom soup and crispy pork shoulder I've ever had. Nice people, by our third trip we were getting hugs. Tried to go recently and it was closed for good. A favorite and wildly busy Chinese restaurant in London, don't recall the name - close the the theatre district - gone. A great hole in the wall under the train tracks sort of behind the PEN in Tokyo, just gone.

Since my first or second visit to Japan years ago, I vividly remember one specific item from bakeries-- a slightly sweet roll stuffed with noodles (and mayonnaise; this photo is from a trip last month):
I've gagged thinking about it; then again, as a child, I was accustomed to having pane toscano with spaghetti.
In summary, the culprit is definitely the mayonnaise.

Fresh herring sandwiches in Amsterdam
The mille-feuille from the departed La Bonbonničre de Buci was the finest pastry item I've ever eaten, several times on several trips.

I love chicken hearts too! I first had them abroad and always get them when I can in the US. Eating rambutan as a snack is also something that has stuck with me - when I can find it.

Pork shoulder with succulent tomatoes and a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino in Florence. It was the first time I had tomatoes that were full of flavour instead of tasting like bland soggy cardboard. The wine was a perfect accompaniment.

Pastel de nata (egg tart) at Manteigaria in Lisbon. I never even liked egg tarts before I ate this one...
Chestnut and Port wine gelato from Gelados de Portugal in Porto - arguably the best scoop of gelato I have ever eaten.
Fresh fruit juice all over Portugal. Dining at cafes back home, I always have to ask whether they have fresh juice. In Portugal, virtually every cafe and restaurant offers several fresh juices. Even the TAP Premium Lounge at LIS maintains a jug of delicious fresh juice at the bar all day (last time I visited, I think it was pineapple and orange).
Cardamom buns at Kanniston Leipomo in Helsinki, and at Valhallabageriet in Stockholm.
Karelian rice pies with egg butter in Finland.
Blueberry soup in Finland.
Not exactly food - but apple cider in Estonia. IMHO, they make some of the best ciders in the world.
All of the Mexican food in Tucson, AZ.
All of the vegetarian/vegan food in LA.
Bagels at Tompkins Square Bagels in NYC.
