Austrian wines

In late summer, I'm planning to visit the Niederösterreich region to visit a few wineries and bring back some wine.

My initial choices of wineries are Weingut Bernhard Ott in the Wagram area, F.X. Pichler in the Wachau area, along with Domäne Wachau.

Anyone been in this area and have other suggestions? I really enjoy Ott's Grüners and have had some nice Grüners from Domäne Wachau. As I've never had the Grüner Rots before, I'm curious about them.

My last meal at Maze featured wine from the Gut Oggau winery. Quite beefy white that I found very nice. Not sure how far from where you're going to be, though.

Domâne Wachau stands out as a favorite of mine by far. The older FX are good but lately the Kellerberg component has lacked something. I like the Achleiten from DW most of all, but a new favorite is their Amphora fermented riesling. Try it you will love it. Any of the better wineries in that stretch outside of Krems are worth a visit I think. If in Vienna, swing by Pub Klemo for a sampling of great Austrian wines.

We spent part of our honeymoon at Weingut Nigl (they have a hotel); they have lovely wines. We also very much enjoyed our visit to Weingut Bründlmayer. Loisium is nice as well.

Oddly enough when I was studying abroad in Europe during college I went to Domäne Wachau with a few friends. I remember it distinctly as the place I fell in love with wine. It was a great experience for me personally and while it may not be as fancy as some of the wine houses I've since been to in Champagne/Bordeaux, it was immensely enjoyable and I highly recommend it.

Oggau looks intriguing, but out of the way for this trip. Thanks for providing the links.

im a sucker for the less popular varietal rotgipfler, the tastes that to me is akin to chablis or un-oaked chardonnays. found only in thermenregion of lower austria

one place to start search is from the popular falstaff guide

Thanks for the Falstaff link. Skimming through it, I ran across a winery that I had forgotten about and have enjoyed their wines - Weingut Stadt Krems.

Also, thanks to FlyinHawaiian for the Nigl suggestion. I've seen their wines but haven't tried them yet.
