Uncomfortable chairs in good restaurants
In the " good old days"a chair in a good restaurant was comfortable. You were comfortable enough to sit fora while, order an after dinner drink , talk a little after dinner. Nowdays I think chairs are a little uncomfortable on purpose to help restaurants turn tables. Stiff, hard, etc. Do you know any places that still encourage you to sit and order a bit more? Or all they all gone?

THIS. I complain about this all the time. Especially the bar chairs where the seat is wood with no cushion and the chair "back" is 2 inches tall. I always end up standing at the bar making people around me uncomfortable because I don't want to sit in those stupid seats.

Grandma BamaVol has a walker that she sits in anywhere she goes. Something to look forward to when you're 90. :D. Unfortunately, it's too low to use at the bar.

Our favorite bar has bar stools without backs. After a bit, I usually alternate standing and sitting, because the bar stools are uncomfortable.

I find I have a bigger problem when the barstools are too comfortable.

I don't get why people would like a bar where it's uncomfortable to sleep. |

I'm with you there. Usually they're expensive custom designed chairs meant to look good with the decor. Costs them over time when they miss out on regulars who don't want a bad back.

NYC seems to have a massive trend towards small backless stools in the hottest restaurants. Salvation Burger comes to mind as a "restaurant of the month" - but also have seen this trend at places running near $100 a person. Momofuku Noodle Bar and the new Nishi from David Chang spring to mind. :td:

This can be because restaurant owners do not have any knowledge of interior designing. They may not have an idea of color combination, selection appropriate design, etc. When they choose their restaurant furniture, they either do it on their own hereby selecting chairs which they feel comfortable. In the second case, they may also hire some interior designing firm or freelancer to give them advice. As a result, the designer may create a design and he/she may select a chair which suits the particular design which he/she created. Because of this, the restaurant owners do what they feel will make their restaurant look charming. Therefore, the end up buying uncomfortable chairs, tables, sofas to make their interior look attractive and they do not focus on client’s comfort. They should focus on buying furniture from specialist supplier who sell high quality chairs in bulk. Cost is definitely a factor and restaurant owners do have to stick to the budget but they should also keep the end goal in mind. Apart from the food, the client should feel comfortable sitting on the chair and using the table on which the food will be served. If they are comfortable they will surely return and even bring their friends. Hence, good restaurants should stop using uncomfortable chairs and focus on giving the best experience and comfort to their customers.

I like to have a drink at the bar before dinner. But some of these bar stools are so terrible. The owners should sit in them for 20 minutes. Some of them are too high, so unless you are a skinny 20 year old, it's hard. And no place to put your feet.
