Glühwein recipe?

I've decided to make glühwein at my party tomorrow. Never had it, so this will be fun.

What's your favorite recipe? I was thinking of this one - will it be too sweet?

I'm making some today. I will try this recipe (although I will probably add a lemon).

I'll post how it turned out.

In the UK we have some really first-class inexpensive supermarket bottled punch. We use quite a lot of it over December and January particularly when coming in from a cold walk. It is all nicely spiced, and I simply gently warm it in a saucepan .... mustn't boil away the alcohol, and then just add a shot at the end ie making it into an Amerreto punch or rum or brandy punch. Sometimes we also add tinned strawberries making it into an erdbeeren punch. We also keep some sweet chestnuts in the fridge and 12 to 13 minutes in the airfryer gives us with the punch the true Christmas Market experience without the flights.

The recipe works fine. I doubled and added one lemon. Tastes just like many cups we have had in Germany.

Yes, I made it last night too. It was great. I used a little less sugar.

For 4 bottles of wine, I used:
2.5 cups sugar
2 oranges (juiced, and then put cloves in the rinds and added them to the syrup mixture)
about 6oz orange juice (there's the sugar I didn't put in earlier :) )

Oh, and some brandy.

The sugar seemed a little too much to me too. That's why I added the lemon. I forgot to mention that I added some brandy (cheap E&J) too!

Prost!

i suppose its a bit too late, but to take it up an extra notch, you can make Feuerangenbowle

it was a small town german tradition, popularized by a movie a long time back. it is basically glugwein, but with a sugar cone on top (sitting on filter/strainer) which is soaked in rum and set alight

Only Germans would choose to burn off alcohol rather than drink it. :p

While homemade is probably better, I usually just buy bottled gluhwein. The Sternthaler Nurnberger Christkindles Gluhwein costs about $7 for a 1 liter bottle, and it tastes exactly like what they serve at every Weihnachtsmarkt I've ever been to in Germany. Although of course there's no substitute for being outside at a Weihnachtsmarkt with a steaming gluhwein, halb meter bratwurst, and kartoffelpuffer mit preiselbeeren!

Cheap brandy and wine is the key. I suppose because of the higher sugar content, I've never felt the need to add white sugar.

A fellow traveler who has a taste palate I trust, suggested the gluhwein from Aldi is tasty: https://www.aldi.us/en/grocery-goods...l-gluehwein-4/
I've never really been an Aldi shopper but will likely purchase a bottle or two.

Edited to add: my local Aldi was all sold out of this, so I guess I'll wait until next year

Swedes make something similar called glögg. I, the American, have been making it for eight years now to rave reviews (from both Swedes and Americans).

This year was my biggest batch to date: 15 litres of white wine, 3-4 lbs of brown sugar, 3-4 lbs of white sugar, lots of spices, and 3 litres of vodka. Not overly sweet with a nice spice kick.

I allocated 18 500ml bottles to be distributed to neighbors and friends (with a custom bottle label and a pretty bow), and the rest to be consumed by guests and family when they enter our house this winter.

I use pretty much the recipe shared by the original OP, with no rum, and add whole star anise

Sorry. Proprietary mix. :)

But Googling "glögg" will get you lots of recipes. The great majority use red wine, but there are a few white wine recipes out there.
