Thank you. Both for the proper name and a good recipe. That's exactly what I was looking for :)

Best thread on FT? :D

My girlfriend (half turkish) did a blog post on Turkish food in Istanbul to try and get more people in to it. Most of the people in the UK still think it's just kebabs and more kebabs...

My Lahmacun recipe is on there as well, always a winner when you have people visiting ^

Teşekkürler, manoni! Nice posts.

As a result of our travels, it's not unusual for us to enjoy a nice menemen breakfast some weekend days. But I miss sitting at a table with my balik ekmek and cold Efes watching the Bosphorus traffic rushing by. :)

In the Sacramento CA area we have Gönül's in town for some really authentic Turkisfph food. Oops, sorry, Gönül moved and renamed her place Vanilla Bean Bistro! And now I see Yelpers and others say she closed!

But in Sacramento we still have Tugce Havar's (Tugce worked at Haydarpasa Numune Hospital in Istanbul, as a Food Dietician; she is ably assisted by her husband, Ertugrul)

Friends, fellow members, what Turkish restaurants do YOU have nearby if we should be passing through?

Zizi's Cafe in Chicago for really good Turkish food. I've had the pide and the iskender kebap (my favorites from my trip to Turkey) and they were both excellent. I look forward to seeing more recipes on this thread.

Seems like that's because most of what you see are kebab places, of highly varying quality. Real Turkish food, like what's highlighted in this thread, is fabulous. Not sure why it is for hard to find outside of Turkey.

Let's not underestimate the kebabs either. If done according to traditions, they are fantastic meals as well.

Sahlep is a lovely hot winter drink made from orchid and mixed with cinnamon. The drink, beyond warming the soul, is good for the heart, mind, and for coughs.

Lovely thread and very much appreciated. You genuinely understand people better when you understand what they eat and if you can - join them for meals. If everyone ate together there would be far less problems in the world! I really love Turkish food, and I wish Turkish people would travel more so that we can experience more of it wherever we are. By the way ..... I can taste those pictures.

I see you're from Istanbul ... a city we love. Anyway .... back to the food ..... and my three boxes of Hazer Baba Turkish delight my wife bought me ...

Thanks for your efforts with this thread.

:)

I had an amazing lamb dish when I was in Turkey years ago. I wish I asked for the recipe and name. It was lamb cut in very small pieces and cooked in a pan like a wok and there was a ton of butter in it. Absolutely delicious. Can't recall where I was at the time - somewhere off the beaten track. Possibly Trabzon or Maçka. Any idea what it was?

BTW you can find lahmacun in Armenian restaurants (at least I have).
