Wine drinkers - what are you having today/tonight?

A Fiano (a very - think at least 2000 years old - Italian grape) by Rivera, called 'Scariazzo'. I'm reading up on my Italian wines so was excited to taste this but next time I should get something from the Avellina (East of Naples) DOC. This was nice but it's just too international in flavour (Fiano can take on many guises but his was just too buttery and too Chardonnay-like to be truly representative of a particular place and time, IMHO). Not a bad wine at all (especially at US$15) but not a great Fiano representative I think.

For lunch a glass of Roederer (always great) and a rose from Martinborough (New Zealand) made with 100% Pinot Noir, called 'the Elder'. Very nice - easy drinking but with enough punch to be of interest.

I had a Fiano for the first time a couple of months ago and loved it (partly because it was part of the first bit of socialising since March) but I never see any on the shelves.

A bottle of Janisson 'Tradition' NV from Verzenay (where the lighthouse is). Always nice - especially as we bought a dozen at auction for about $25 each :-)

1969 Cote de Nuits Villages Maison Thomas Bassot. Was searching the cellar for some burgundy or any pinot noir to serve with duck confit and came across this. No idea where it came from, think it may have been a gift from a few years back. Cork wasn’t in great shape, the first glass was drinkable, but by the third it was more like a sherry. Worth a try.

Finished with lemon posset paired with a Jen Pfeiffer The Diamond, Rock It Like a Redhead, a 10 year old tawny port from Rutherglen in Australia. Tasted like toffee in a glass, wonderful.

Oh and started with Granbazán Etiqueta Verde 2019 Albariño with some bresaola.

Remarkable that it still held up after 50+ years, especially considering it's 'only' a villages.

We had a bottle of Piper Heidsieck - normally wouldn't buy it but it was on huge discount at the local supermarket and of course it was quite nice.

I think “held up” would be stretching it. It was drinkable, but a little flat, for 20 mins, then deteriorated very quickly as happens. Half went down the drain sadly.

Yes, we visited the winery, among others, in 2016. We bought several cases of wine from various wineries in the area. Emmerich Knoll is another great winemaker to try. Our trip was a great tasting adventure. Wine was fantastic, of course.

To match a low/medium spicy chili with cornbread, we tried a bottle of E. Guigal, Côtes-du-Rhône 2016, which turned out to be a good match

Kir-Yianni Xinomavro Ramnista 2016 - a little-known grape from Greece, Xinomavro, but an excellent one, often compared to a blend of Pinot Noir and Barolo.
Much enjoyed this (89/100) but would ideally give this at least another 3-4 years.

Also, a bottle of Ayala Rose Majeur (50% Chardonnay, 40% PN, and 10% PM). An excellent, very flavourful Champagne.

After a few Old Fashionds and a bottle of everday white we are enjoying a primitivo from the friendly chaps at Di San Marzano. It doesn’t go with the miso salmon we are about to have, but that’s another story!
