That's certainly a terrific combination, and also a solid cornerstone for a really Merry Christmas. Enjoy!

What is inside the box? Or do they just produce a single type of wine?

Oh yes! But in controlled storage, will be great for at least 10 more years, probably many more than that.

I'll call the wine merchant to check how many bottles he still has in stock

That's a picture of their gift box, it doesn't tell us anything about the wine inside. They make quite a few types of wine.

Now drinking Vacqueyras Le Sang des Cailloux Cuvée Lopy 2011. Tried twice in previous years, and it was still too young and closed up, but now it is fabulous! Also have some Château des Tours 2010 in the cellar (very smooth and elegant), some Domaine des Garrigues (both regular and the Cuvée de l'Hôtellerie) 2014, all drinking well now, as are some offerings from Santa Duc up the road (Gigondas and some Habemus Papam from Châteauneuf-du-Pape).

I love this part of the world! Also in the cellar are some Domaine de Durban Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise, a glorious dessert wine that I have been drinking for at least 20 years now. Every vintage is different. but always wonderful.

Every time I go to this part of the world, I always buy direct from the vineyard. It's always a great experience. Missing it a lot, not having been able to visit this year!

A magnum, huh? What did your guests have to drink then? :-)

Tonight (Coravin) 1979 Chateau de Pez (one of the better Cru Bourgeois in St Estephe, bought by Roeder erin 1995). Second time (different bottle) and lovely once again.
Yesterday a half bottle of Krug NV. I estimate the bottle was about 10 years old so it had some bottle aging. Amazing, as always with Krug.

For the Sunday roast, I yesterday uncorked two bottles of 1996 Chateau Pichon Longueville Baron, expecting them to be fully mature now

And were they? I’m still on the 80s for good Claret, which are drinking well.

Ooooh yesss! Absolutely lovely, but has some potential of further improvement. Next bottle/s to be opened in 6-12 months.

Otherwise, I agree with you on the merit of many 80s, of which many doesn't show any signs of age.
