That actually sounds kind of cool.

This thread brings back a lot of memories, none of them pleasant, but I would have to say creamed chipped beef on white toast or some sort of animal tongue (with tastebuds visible), served on a platter and carved at the table in front of my horrified eyes.

Wait...there was one more thing. What was it? Oh yeah, finnan haddie, some sort of smoked fish that was floating around in a cream sauce. It appeared on the table right about the time Moon Unit Zappa's seminal hit 'Valley Girl' came out, and is the dish with which my sister and I will forever associate the lyrics "It's like BARF ME OUT. Gag me with a spoon."

Thanks for the memories Mom.

Creamed chipped beef on toast (SOS) was one of the few things my father would cook for us. I quite liked it and found that Stouffers made it in boil-in-bag format for years. It tasted like what my father had made. Only one out four of my kids was converted, however. The rest left it to congeal on their plates.

Thanks for the FZ reference. That brings back memories for me. The man was a genius and IMO, one of the 5 best guitarists to ever play the instrument.

I've been saving "top of the stove scalloped potatoes"

Likely of WWII rationing origin, this dish was doomed to failure, although oddly delicious.

Mom's version:

Put sliced potatoes and carrots in a pot with milk and boil. (Original included onion, but that was exotic...) Here's the first problem, the milk always boiled over and curdled.

When carrots soft add salt and pepper and American cheese. Here's the second problem, but the time the carrots were soft the potatoes were mush.

Add crushed saltine crackers and serve.

This has potential. My recipe:

Saute Carrots and Onion with some garlic in Olive oil until partially cooked. If you have something else like celery, go ahead and throw it it. Salt and Pepper to taste, and add diced potatoes.

When potatoes are tender but not mush, add milk/cream and cheese of your choice and cook until melted. (cheddar is good, but this is a good clean out the fridge opportunity.)

Serve.
