Favorite Rum for Mojitos?
Hi!
Ive been into Mojitos lately and was just curious what your favorite Rum was for this concoction. Recently mixed in Havana Club Blanco (Cuban not PR) that the fiancee brought back from Italy. Very tasty :D thanks - dan |
10 Cane Rum....is very delicious!

cool! Never tried the 10 Cane.
Anyone try Mount Gay? Supposedly one of the oldest Rum Distilleries in the world |

Captain Morgan Overproof is also quite good, but hard to find (and a lot better than the regular Captain Morgan rum which is everywhere). But for a mojito it is no contest, Havana Club is the best, just restricted to outside the US for real Cuban rum.

I want to serve Mojitos at my wedding, wanting to stay away from Bacardi but also be price conscience. Ill try all the ones mentioned. Let me know if there are any more recommendations. Thanks ^ |

It's all about the Ron el Barrilito. Not always easy to find in the States but definitely worth the effort.

Since mojitos are supposed to be a light, refreshing mint drink, I like to stick with a good white rum when I make them. Mount Gay definitely works. I find dark rums or spiced rums make the drink too heavy and drown out the mint flavor.

Havana Club
Without a doubt it is Havana Club ^

Being born and raised in Puerto Rico
I feel that I can provide some good input to this topic. First and foremost, Bacardi IS NOT that great. It has a strong marketing campaign, but it is not great. Most Puertoricans prefer Don Q, by the Seralles family. Another good rum mentioned in a previous thread in Ron Del Barrilito, but get the 3 star, it is a bit smoother. Another popular PR rum is Palo Viejo, but you will not find it outside of PR.

Mount Gay makes for a perfect mojito. But, I have been so disappointed in ordering them in many places. Just because it's a good drink doesn't mean a bartender can make them well. Make sure your bartenders can!

The "classic" Mojito of my early memory contained little more than mint, fresh "Key" lime juice, sugar (or simple syrup, not as good for "muddling", but not leaving undissolved grains in the drink) and "white" rum (in bars, usually a cheap local "well" brand, likely Havana Club or Bacardi were one in "old' Cuba). Well made, and the brand of rum was unlikely to be distinguishable. The modern addition of club soda seems a sort of heresy, perpetrated to keep people ordering a cocktail (designed for partaking one or two at most) for a full evening of boozing.
If you can find a bar(wo)man capable of mixing all three to classic standards, comparing a Mojito, a Daiquiri and a Bacardi Cocktail can be educational and enjoyable. Then there's that deadly Brazilian drink using the rawest of cane spirits, lime and sugar. Having an acquaintance related to the family owning (once? still?) Barbancourt, there's usually a bottle of one of the brand's 'aged' products on my shelf, but not for Mojitos. For several years I was enamored of Flor de Cana from Nicaragua, cheap, but with good flavor, but drink less rum these days. |
Flor de Cana.

thanks for the recommendations, cant wait to try them all. ;)

ANYTHING but Bacardi. I find it vile in mojitos. Havana is absolutely worth picking up duty free whenever reentering if you're normally in the US. |
any mojito topped off with a splash of champagne is also very nice^
|
Cruzan Jamaican Rum.....NO Doubt Man!;)
|
Mount Gay, real cheap at the distillery, but expensive to get there.

Mt Gay or Havana Club Cuba
|
Inner Circle.

So true that hardly any bartenders are capable of making a proper mojito. It's basically my favourite cocktail, but I rarely get a good one.
